Xenobuzz
Greetings, all! So I'd been puttering around in Oblivion for the past few weeks and enjoying myself somewhat. It took awhile to remember which keys to use, how to properly employ my Bag of Holding (a VITAL mod for this game, IMHO) and how to navigate the menus. However, something was missing. I didn't realize what it was until I read the Wiki and looked at my stats. I'd been playing for 30 days in-game and never slept to level up! D'OH!! I was still level 1!! I hightailed over to my house at the Waterfront and proceeded to sleep for probably about a day and a half, getting to level 6. However, I hadn't read the extensive character building page, and that overwhelmed me yet again with the sheer volume of choices and information. I'm sure I made a number of poor choices in my skill allotments, so I want to return to a save game where I'm back at level 1 and hopefully develop this character properly. I am playing the default race, whatever that is. First, I should say what kind of character I like to play in these type of games. For example, in Fallout 3 I've always relied on stealth (Chinese stealth suit, Shady Hat) and silent weapons (Dart Gun, Silenced 10mm pistol). I'm tired of melee combat as it gets very repetitive and involves to much clicky-clicky. In Diablo II, I love the Necromancer because he can send his minions forth to do the whackety-whack while he stands back and casts spells. I would like to choose a character in Oblivion that will represent one or both of these playing styles. Which one(s) would you recommend? Second, I've been carrying around the Debaser for quite awhile, but I've no clue how to recharge the enchantments, or even how to employ them in combat. Third, I've got a bunch of scrolls, but never used them in combat either. How does one do that? Fourth, I have a LOT of harvested plant ingredients, as well as Novice level Alembic, Calcinator, Retort, and Mortar & Pestle. How do I use these? Can't find any info on this in the Wiki. Fifth, I have a few Soul Gems, but how to use them? Again, can't find any info in the Wiki. I'm at level 8 now, and just one encounter with a wolf is enough to almost completely drain my health! He takes out my Skeleton in one attack! Now I can't even explore because I have to spend so much time healing! Slash N' Smash doesn't sell any weapons that do greater damage than 3. What do I do?! You can tell by these questions that I'm VERY new to the game! I enjoy running around the landscape, but exploring the towns and talking to the people is boring to me. I want to explore and quest, not gab and haggle. Should I even be playing this game, is it the right fit for the kind of gamer I am? Right now I'm feeling VERY overwhelmed by EVERYTHING. The games just feels too big, like I'd need to attend Oblivion college just to be able to play it properly! Dave S. blackninja50
I can't answer all your questions and my spelling is kind of unreadable but I'll try. First look at this it might help if you've not read it yet http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Oblivion:First_Time_Players (1) the only help I can give you for this is to look here http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Oblivion:Character_Creation (3) go to your magic menu scroll all the way down, you will see a list of scrolls click on one of them, then leave the magic menu and hit the cast button and you will use whatever magic the scroll was for. do note that the scroll will be used up. look here for more help http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Oblivion:Scrolls (4) go to your bag and click on your Mortar & Pestle (if you have never done it before a tutorial should com up that will kind of explain it) if that dose not help just try to figure it out by playing around it's kind of simple. look here for more help http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Oblivion:Alchemy (5) go to your bag and click on a Soul Gem it will bring up a menu for recharging magic items or go to a alter of enchanting and click on it you will get a menu for enchanting items. Or look here http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Oblivion:Enchanting now at first most enemies will be a pain (that is in tall you master your skills http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Oblivion:Skills) the best way to over come this is to hit Esc click game play, you should see a slider that says "difficulty" slid it down from the middle all the way left you will now do 6x damage and all enemies will only do 1/6 damage (as you get stronger you can slid it back to the middle to prevent it from being to easy later on) hope this kind of helps. macole
Second, I've been carrying around the Debaser for quite awhile, but I've no clue how to recharge the enchantments, or even how to employ them in combat To recharge weapons you can either pay a mage at any of the mages guild halls to do it, use a filled soul gem or use a varla stone. Varla stones found in Ayleid ruins are the most economical method. One varla stone will recharge all magical items in your inventory. To help with your questing if you're not opposed to enchanted weapons I would suggest a mod like Dalls_Valeria. Some may say the scimitars and big tulwar may be a bit op but hey I like em. Besides can you help it if you just happen to find a couple of scimitars dropped by some merchants who were brutally attacked on the Talos Bridge few days ago.
