How to import new armor models ?

Hello,

I've been looking for a way to import custom armor models into Skyrim. And basically, I'm using these meshes : http://ludicrousmods.com/

More specifically, i'm trying to import Fiona armor : http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=37759.

It's very easy to get it into 3dsmax, applying skin modifier, dismemberment modifier and so on. But then I'm a bit lost.

I've followed this tutorial : http://www.skyrimnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=3746

However, the game crashes when I try to equip the item with the new mesh. (Basically, I'm overwriting eisen armor, as I havent figured out how to create my own armors).

It would be nice if anyone who did this before could guide me.

Thanks

Have you tried

tutorial?

It's listed in the description of the tutorial page you linked, and its for a helmet, but the process is exactly the same for armor. I've followed it and it has worked flawlessly for me, and yes, I've used it with custom armor meshes, angel wings, necklaces, etc. I find video tutorials are much easier to follow that written ones, even with pictures.

One more thing, use a vanilla asset to cut and paste nifskope blocks to/from. Everytime i've tried using data from already edited meshes, it fails everytime.

Are you exporting the mesh with the body that is already existing, or skinning it to fit Skyrim's bodies? For the former, you need object normal maps for the body you're trying to import. For the latter, you need to get to work with adapting the mesh to work with the body. Gauntlets and feet are also a mess because the changes in skeleton topology in skyrim means that you'll have to remodel the gauntlets for Skin Wrap to skin properly, and/or do some manual work as well. Either way, my expertise is limited here. Edited by jimhsu

Here's what I do :

1 - export fiona set from oblivion mod as .obj using nifskope

2 - import .obj into 3dsmax

3 - import dawn robes's nif file from skyrim into 3dsmax

4 - skin wrapping and some other adjustments (mainly positionning)

5 - export fiona set with dawn skeleton into a skyrim nif file

6 - do whatever is listed in the video with nifskope

(except that I do not copy/paste the BSLightingShader from dawn robes, but I'm adjusting values of the already existing shader)

7 - run skyrim

8 - player.equipitem blabla

9 - run around like rayman :P

Couple of things:

Looks like you are using the existing body from the Fiona armor. You need object normal maps (_msn.dds) for that.

The 3ds max importer doesn't export the shaders properly. You need to copy the entire block from a skyrim nif and edit it to work.
