I was watching an Arena "Lets play" on Youtube and I thought that it could be a nice idea to remake this game in Skyrim's engine.

Arena is too old by now and it doesn't even run natively in modern Windows OSs,and its graphics, sound and UI feel ancient, but I think it has a respectfull fun factor.

Since Bethesda gives away Arena for free I think it wouldn't hurt them if we re-make the game to run in Skyrim's engine as a total conversion mod.

To be sure if I find people interested in such a task I will send them an e-mail to ask them their permission.

I believe that the best way to re-make this game is by using Skyrim's standard resources if available and only make custom resources when they are really needed.

So we could use Skeevers where Arena has Rats, and Falmer where it has Goblins etc,to save time.

Who is interested, and what is your opinion about such a task/mod ?

Would you be interested to play Arena if it was made with modern graphics,ui,music etc ? And if you do mod yourself, are you interested in re-making the first game of the series to run on Skyrim's engine ?

Let's talk about it!

:)

Except that is does hurt. Bethesda has stated time and time again, and well on record stating that this is not allowed. Even though they are allowing people to license the game for free, they still own the copyrights and disallow using any assets from any game they own in a different games engine (that they themselves didn't put there).

It's not illegal he would remake it without using the assets of arena, what would be the point of porting a few sprites and blocks over to skyrim.

Yeah I believe it's only illegal to use the ASSETS. Cuz someone created Morrowind in Oblivion, without using the assets, I believe. Nobody would ever use Arena or Daggerfall assets in Skyrim's engine, though.

Regardless of all that, it would be pretty much impossible to create Arena in Skyrim. Arena encompassed all of Tamriel. The entire continent. That would take a couple of years + 100's of people working 80 hours a week to do.

Daggerfall is similar to Arena, but it's freeware now. Look up the DaggerXL engine; the point is to modernize Daggerfall for current Operating Systems and support higher draw distances and resolutions. It's not done yet though. It is legal, which is good, since it requires you to already own Daggerfall assets, and the game is freeware so you can get it straight from the Bethesda site. Edited by Rennn

You are sadly misinformed and/or mistaken. It is illegal. Here is a link to a Staff comment from a discussion on a Morrowind full conversion, which is relevant to any conversion. Until such a time as Bethsoft gives someone written authorization to do a conversion, it is illegal and can't be hosted here.

Your link and your post contradict eachother, as the link proves that the OP's idea is fine.

I hate to sound like a beotch here but...

Actually, the whole deal includes a "remake" of any of their games. You can't do it legally without a written authorization from the copyright owner, Zenimax Media/Bethesda in this case. Before any more arguments ensue or continue on this subject, you folks should really do some research and then contact Zenimax Media's legal department for their official answer if you still aren't sure.

In the USA you can call +1 301-926-8300or in the UK +44 207 025 7360, Ask for legal department contact info.

Also, from the TES: Arena Software License Agreement...

Copyright: This manual, packaging and the SOFTWARE are copyrighted. No part of this manual or the

described SOFTWARE may be copied, reproduced, translated or reduced to any electronic medium or

machine-readable form without the prior written consent of Bethesda Softworks.

So again, unless you have written permission from Zenimax/Bethesda, it is illegal and can not be uploaded/hosted here if it were made without a license.
