PC freezes when 360 controller is plugged in

So im having a really weird problem.

I'm playing Skyrim on PC and i wanted to use my 360 controller i just got and for some reason every time i try and attack using ether R2 or L2 the buttons everything just freezes.... and i mean everything. However as soon as i unplug the controller everything is back to normal and no other buttons trigger the freeze. Just the R2 and L2 triggers.

Ive tried looking this issue up on quite a few sites looking at bug list, ive looked here on the forums, and Ive found nothing regarding this problem.

O i guess i should mention the full 360 ring flashes all the time on the controller the whole time its plugged in as well. Not sure if that's relivent or not.

Edit:

SOLVED........ mostly

Well i just got the controller yesterday, so i haven't really used it on anything else. See i actually own a ps3 and i got a converter for it yesterday to use it with ps3 (works great on the ps3)...... So i cant say that it works well with any other games. Should i test it out with Oblivion? (before you ask, No, i don't have the converter plugged in with it when i use the PC)

Yes i have it enabled in the options. As i said every other button works just fine. Its just the R2 and L2 attack triggers that cause it to freeze.

Is there is some kind of "repair" or "fix Tool" i can use on the files to see if something was damaged or not installed properly? i actually looked..... i couldn't find anything

So i found some more stuff out and sent a email to Skyrim support...... ill highlight the important bits and a happy accident i found if you have read everything thus far.

Im having a problem using an Official Xbox 360 controller. The problem is that the game freezes the screen when i use ether the L2 & R2 buttons to attack in both 1st person and 3ed person view. I am able to use all of the other buttons on the controller as they are intended and i can even draw my weapons using the L2 & R2 buttons but the second i attack or use a spell... everything freezes. When i say everything freezes i mean everything freezes; this includes the keyboard, mouse, controller and screen. The only things i can do are power down my computer OR unplug the 360 controller. Unplugging the controller UN-freezes EVERYTHING and it looks as though the attack/spell goes threw only when it’s unplugged. So I don’t think it’s simply a visual problem.

I did say that when I attack in both 3ed and 1st person it freezes HOWEVER there is an exception i found by accident when testing the controller again before writing this. I have found that while in beast form I am able to attack without everything freezing, like normal. I have tested this “bug” “Error” or w/e you want to call it both WITH and WITHOUT mods installed to confirm that a mod is not the cause of the problem.

I have also looked into this issue online, posting in forums and looking at known bug list. I’ve yet to find anything similar to the issue I have described and it seems no one has any answers on any forums so im thinking its ether a very rare bug, or some kind of installation error.

Is there some kind of “fix” tool or something in the Skyrim files that could check for bad files or missing ones and fix them? Or would I need to try a full uninstall then reinstall everything?

Also i have DirectX 10 from what i can tell but im going to try and Download X11 after sending this and see if that helps.... I have no idea what it will do. I don't know much about DirectX software other than its needed to play games =/

Thank you for your time.

I'm also interested in this because the same exact thing happens to me. Another interesting thing I have found:

If you do ctrl-alt-del then shutdown Skyrim through the task manager it creates a "ghost" Skyrim that runs in the background and cannot be stopped unless you shutdown your computer. Even more interesting is that after doing this, you can boot up Skyrim again and play with the controller with zero problems. I've yet to find the solution, but I'm looking. I wish you (and myself) luck!

Edit:

I feel so dumb for not trying before, but after disabling vibration in the menu the freezing issue seems to have disappeared. I suggest you try the same. I just barely tried this (as of 2 minutes ago), so it isn't confirmed and will test some more. I'm keeping my fingers crossed!

It is, and it may be at the core of your problems.

The ring indicates that the receiver is not getting a consistent data stream from the controller.

You should first try changing the batteries, making sure they are properly oriented.

Them move the receiver to another location just in case you are seeing interference from something.

Finally try plugging the receiver into another port in the mothrboard itself. Do NOT use a USB port expander, etc...

If all else fails take the controller back.... though it could possibly be your system as well. Skyrim runs great on the PC with an Xbox 360 controller.

Just found something, haven't tried Skyrim yet but a solution for the blinking lights and possibly solution for everything. It appears MotioninJoy is a dumb piece of software and was conflicting with pretty much everything. I can only assume that you had this program before as I also had the blinking lights. Here is the solution:

Plug in your controller and allow it to download drivers and whatnot. When that is complete go to your device manager and find this:

Edit: it may actually say MotioninJoy Virtual Xinput device of Windows rather than Xbox 360 Controllers for Windows. This screenshot came from after I fixed the problem.

Just to make sure it gets done right, right click on Xbox 360 Controllers for Windows and select properties. Go to the driver tab and select uninstall. Now, this next step is VERY important and VERY simple, and I feel dumb once again for not being observant. When a dialog pops up you should see something like this:

Make sure you tick the highlighted check box! After this, unplug and replug it in. Let it search for it's drivers and voila! The flashing lights problem is solved! If the problem persists make sure you have uninstalled the MotioninJoy program as well. I know it caused me nothing but pain, and believe me when I say you don't need it.

Now, I think I'll go test Skyrim. I'll get back to this thread as soon as I can confirm that I'm problem free or not with or without vibration enabled. Once again, I wish you (and myself) luck!

Edit2: Success! Skyrim now has no problems whatsoever running even with vibration enabled. I have successfully found the solution to my problem, and I can only hope your problem was the same as mine and that you can be as successful. I know I've said it so many times already, but I'll say it again: Good luck!

This has indeed solved the problem. Thank you very much =D

However ive been quite sick and wile in my medicated state mainly confined to my bed and computer ive become quite accustom to using my mouse and keyboard. Ive passed this info on to Bethesda support and maybe they can help some people with the same problem out.
