CK crash to blue screen on 1st launch...

Hey guys,

I've been away a while and only installed Fallout 4 CK on my rig today.

But whenever I try to launch it, it opens with all the windows piled up like it did with launching Skyrim's CK for the 1st time, but as soon as I try to move them around to tidy it up, the CK freezes for a few seconds before my whole computer crashes to blue screen. I don't even have time to try and load an .esm.

I checked my GPU driver (nVidia GTX 980 on a Win 7 pro system) and it's perfectly up to date.

Then I checked the CreationKit.ini file, which is only partial and stops after the [Papyrus] section, tried to compare it with SkyrimEditor.ini but that gave me no clue either 'cause too many setting are different and completely obscure to me. Obviously I'm missing a huge section of the .ini file, but I'm guessing that's normal since my CK never really initiated. I googled my issue to try and find some fix but couldn't find anything relevant.

Anybody has an idea what I could try to get it working?

Many thanks in advance, guys!..

you can delete the ini and it will make a new one upon start up.

Also please check your virtual memory and make sure you have max at least 12Gb (min 2-max 12 )

If you dont have room on your hard drive for the virtual memory then thats one possible issue...

CK for fo4 is memory hungry your vga has nothing to do with it...(once you get it running you will see that the vga barely gets warm...

Also make sure you have antivirus etc either closed or exceptions added for the CK and have CK run as Administrator as well.

Hey GreekRage, thanks!

Yep, my virtual memory was maxed at 16Gb for all drives - but getting into advanced parameters I noticed my Game driver was set to "no file exchange" - I just changed that to "size managed by the system" (sorry if that's not accurate language, my Pc's a French one) which adds up to over 48Gb virtual memory for my 3 drives, roughly 16Gb for each drive.

As for deleting the .ini file and retrying to launch it as Admin - I tried that, didn't work. But if it was a matter of virtual memory, I guess that was not enough.

Will let you know how it worked out after increasing Virtual Memory - thanks!

Ok, changing the virtual memory of my Game (virtual) drive made a bit of a difference, I was able to launch the CK, move the windows around to tidy it up this time, as well as load Fallout4.esm, but as soon as I tried to view Material Property, I crashed to blue screen again, this time displaying 0x000116 error and seemingly pointing at my GPU (nvlddmk.sys) but that's been inconsistent - not two of my BSOD displayed the same error message... :pinch:

I'll check my new .ini file against yours, see of I can find anything possibly relevant...

Thanks anyway!

Well, thanks kingtobbe, and I sure would if other programs than Beth's F04 CK had any issue but everything else on that rig works just 100% smoothly: all my installed games including Skyrim's CK, 3DS max, Photoshop, Première...

I ran several system diagnostic tools without detecting any error at all, cleaned the Registry, reinstalled the CK, checked that my drivers were up to date, verified F04 and the Ck's cache... been trying all sorts of things all day. Honestly, I'm very reluctant to reinstall my whole system and programs from scratch just because one single Bugthesda's .exe crashes... In my experience with their games and various Creation Kits, crashes are pretty much a constant of their tools, and hardly ever due to your system...

Nope, I was running the CK directly from its executable in my SteamApps\Common\Fallout 4 folder - it seems that Bethesda.net Launcher created shortcut is corrupt.

Anyway, thanks a lot for your help, guys, I finally did solve it.

It was in fact my system files being at fault. Even though my GPU drivers were detected as updated by nVidia, I checked them all one by one in their appropriate folders and finally noticed that one nVidia .sys file was dated way older than the rest of them. So I uninstalled my GPU drivers and reinstalled them anew - and this time they all updated properly. I guess some of these auto-updates hadn't been installing properly, or one Windows update messed up with them...

I haven't been making many attempts yet with F04 CK, but at least I can launch it and previews do display without crashing now.

The only strange downside which followed was that, on launch, both Skyrim and F04 reset all my settings to... low!.. I manually set them back to ultra and high as they were before and both games run as fine as they did before.

Again, thank you very much for your help, guys  - Greekrage, the copy of your .ini file helps a lot, thanks!
