Skyrim SE won't start?

Note: I don't use forums too much, I've only ever used Nexus forums specifically like twice....so don't judge if I do something wrong, please :D

So I'm not too familiar with NMM, I use MO for Oldrim, but I have learned in my recent studies of skyrim modding that trying to run a mod with a .bsa file in SSE causes the game to simply not start at all. I can hit play, and the game won't start (I know why this happens, this isn't my problem, and I know how to unpack a .bsa etc.).

Earlier today, I went on the nexus to install the simply optimized textures mod and happened to pick up sneak tools for SSE, footprints for SSE, and no map fog along the way. I installed all the mods and tried to run my game, but it was acting as if there was a .bsa file somewhere and just wouldn't start. I then proceeded to troubleshoot by running as admin, verifying the cache, checking my drivers, checking for NMM updates, and restarting my computer before uninstalling the new mods listed and trying to run the game. NOPE; still didn't work.

At this point I have no idea what to do. I don't want to reinstall the game since my playthrough is like 200+ hours currently and I'm very invested in the game right now....but if it comes to it then I will have to ;-;

load order:

(the AOS patch shouldn't affect anything even if it is checked. Just ignore it)

mod list if it helps:

Okay, I had this problem and this was the solution that worked for me:

Turn - OFF - your mods with Nexus Mod Manager. Do NOT uninstall them. Just go to the PLUG IN TAB and Click the Circle with the Line through it.

This will turn OFF all the mods. Turn back on any and all DLC's that you have.

Then see if the game starts?

Then wait until you get into the Helgen Building with either side you choose.

.... SAVE THE GAME HERE ....

Now 1 of 2 things will happen:

1. Try turning back on your mods within the NMM PLUG IN TAB. The Green Check Mark.

... Load the game and see if it works? SAVE and move forward. :)

Now some, myself included found it did work.

Some found it would NOT work until they totally exited Helgen and were in SKYRIM.

After some trial and error, I also had to wait in another re-start of the game, until I had exited Helgen completely and was in Skyrim Save Game.

Now if neither of the above work - you have a mod or mods that are not working correctly and/or conflict with each other.

Update: I tried what you suggested and it didn't work :(

to clarify, I start a new game after disabling all plugins, then make it to helgen keep where I save, exit, enable all plugins, and see if it runs. If not I continue to where I exit into Skyrim where I then save, exit, enable, restart.

I did the above, but the game didn't start when I entered helgen nor did it start when I entered skyrim. I still get the game menu, but the game never starts. ;-;

No mods should be incompatible since they had all worked perfectly yesterday...

Man, that stinks. I'm afraid the answer may not be awesome, but it's a lot less time that you've spent on your save so far. I got away from NMM for MO a long time ago myself. I had to go through something like this to remember that one very important thing to remember with NMM vs MO is installation order. Because there are no virtual file systems in NMM, you have to remember you can't move mods around like you can in MO, because you're writing into the actual data folder with mods. Crappy part is it means the mods you want to "win" conflicts have to be installed in the proper sequence. That means given what you've done with verifying cache restoring vanilla files, you'll have no choice but to un-install all your mods because all the stuff they changed got re-written to vanilla so resources or loose file changes are gone. I don't mean de-activate... totally uninstall every single one and then restore your data folder to vanilla. You then have to re-install each mod in the order that makes sense. I would recommend using STEP (http://wiki.step-project.com/STEP:2.2.9.2) to help with that. Break your installation into sections like they do. You have different mods, but this will give you a guideline to go by for a more... sensible order. Test a new save after each section (new vanilla save just to test for conflicts). With MO, which I ruefully miss myself, you could just move mods around, but in NMM you have to re-install everything in correct order to do that, which is why MO is so much better for large load orders with lots of mods. Also, I think I noticed you might be missing some patches (i.e. AOS and RW2 need a patch, but you have SOS without the SOS esp). Once you've done that, I'd use SSEedit to look for conflicts, because I think you'll find some. For example, you have Interesting NPC's plugin active, but not the mod itself, which can't be helping your game. Uninstalling everything and then re-installing the mods in the sequence STEP recommends should help you out a lot I think.

Lastly, you've a bunch of oldrim mods from the 32 bit version. You'll need the esp's of those files updated in SSE via the creation kit. Very easy to do. Just slow and tedious because loading each esp in the CK and re-archiving the file is laborious. DarkFox127 has some really helpful videos for that on YouTube. Bethesda changed the form ID to 44, which according to some mod authors will cause problems later in game. When I say it's recommend by authors, I'm talking about folks like Cal and Arthmoor - very weighty authorities that know what they're talking about. Cal was interviewed by Game Informer magazine about SSE modding and Arthmoor we should all recognize for things like the unofficial patches. You can read about what Arthmoor found at:

.

Hope this helps. I know reading this sucks, but I'm afraid not doing it will just perpetuate the problem. I went through it too. Eventually had to scrap and start a new save myself. Regardless of what you do the advice above would be the way to go to recover your game or start a new save. Good luck and sorry again.

Okay, so the game worked just fine - YESTERDAY - ( ? ) - based on what you said?

I am going to guess that you did NOT install any mods since then or make any changes to any .INI files and such??

Based on what you have stated, IF indeed you added and/or changed nothing in your game ... then obviously something got seriously corrupted.

You started a NEW game, which means you did NOT use any prior saved games???

-- Let's try one last thing:

Go To: < Dir > ... \my games\Skyrim Special Edition

Then create a directory called Temp-Backup in the \Skyrim Special Edition .. directory.

< dir > ... my games\Skyrim Special Edition\temp-backup\

.. Move .. do not copy: the following files there: Skyrim.ini & skyrimPrefs.ini

Then start the game and Skyrim SE will recreate these 2 files. Let it.

Try that .. if that does NOT work with a CLEAN - NEW GAME.

Then ... sadly, something got seriously corrupted in your Skyrim.exe and I am afraid you have to re-download / install the game and all DLC's as well.

Good Luck and may the 9 be with you ... fellow Dovahkiin.

Thank you for all the help given it really means a lot to me. Sorry I haven't responded, I've been away for thanksgiving all week.

TJacks, thank you for the suggestion, I will try that only as a last resort. I know it will probably work, but I just want to make sure no one else has a potential solution that may work before doing something so time consuming if I can help it.

JJ, I read over your suggestion after I wrote the above, thank you so much for all the time you put into my problem :D. I'm loathe to reinstall, but if I have to I will....though only after I attempt what TJacks suggested.

  • 2 weeks later...

Welp, I'm at a loss. I had life things to do, so it took me awhile to get to this, but tonight I went through and completely deleted everything that had to do with SSE (I kept a copy of my save file just in case it worked), and wrote down what mods I was using. Then once I made sure everything was clean, I reinstalled SSE, ran it on vanilla to the point of entering Helgen Keep, saved and exited, reinstalled all my mods, and tried to run the game. Didn't work. My soul was crushed. I have no clue what to do now, but it may involve testing each mod individually.......which could take a long time.

send help

(also, no I did not use the backup save. It is on a disc completely separate from my SSE files and hasn't been on my computer since I wiped SSE)

EDIT: Nvm, being the dumb dumb that I am, I forgot to unpack the BSA on one of the mods I ported over....game works perfectly (knock on wood) :D

also I saved the wrong save file, so now I'm starting from nothing yay
