Skyrim runs great on my old PC

A recent question I got on my Youtube channel, is typical of what I get a lot:

hey dude what are your pc's specs? cause i have an alienware worth $3000 and skyrim has 20-30fps on medium graphics settings

I'm running Vista 32 bit with an i7 2.67 GHz, 3 GB Corsair DDR3 ram, GTX 295 video card, EVGA X58 SLI 3 motherboard, and a 1000w Ultra PSU, which is over 3 years old now. When Skyrim first ran, it set the video performance to High with a resolution of 1360x768 - which I changed to 1280x720.

To top that off, I'm recording with FRAPS, which can give my system a performance hit in some games, but is hardly noticable in Skyrim. Fraps shows a yellow 60 when not recording, and a red 30 when it is. It does drop, but if it wasn't for the number, I wouldn't notice in the gameplay.

Anyone know why people are having performance issues with system specs that look good on paper? Maybe it's a problem with ATI cards? I keep reading complaints about the vanilla graphics, game engine and other aspects that were thumbed down to suit "outdated consoles", but if that's the case, why so many problems? Whatever they did, they saved me the cost of having to update my rig for a little while.

(Now if Borderlands 2 runs just as good, I'll be safe until next fall. This will probably be my last gaming PC anyway, as I may give in to buying the nextgen console. Just seems cheaper and less of a hassle, with a wider selection of games I enjoy.)

Those people have a lot of money but they don't have time to take care about their new toy. That's why they have so bad performance and they are forced to buy every 2 years a new box. I wish I have those people as my customer but then again my communication skill is so bad that my customer hardly come back or advertise me. Is this an answer to your question?

Yeah you're resolution is pretty low.

I have a GTX 275 (exactly half of a 295) and on the steps in Whiterun I get a steady 30fps. This guy posted an FPS in the same spot of 25 with a 6870. We both have the same resolution (1920x1080) and run on Ultra, so it is a bit odd.

I get nice frame rates with 1360x768 too (which is as high as my monitor allows). I record with fraps at a lower resolution to minimize the size of the processed videos for Youtube, which are huge (5 to 10 gb) enough already because of their length (1 hr+) and quality.

Thanks for the tip. I'll suggest a lower resolution to the next person who asks.

So people do not know how to optimize their computer for this game. I have a old none gaming computer, so I have everything set-up for performance. Nvidia tweek guide helps a lot when you are trying to get the maximum performance out of your computer. Anyways with this guys fps in the tweak guide with the various resolutions: 60fps=1280-1024, 40fps=1680-1050, 32fps=1920-1200, 28fps=2560-1600. You can see that your resolution has the largest impact on fps. Also, running your game in windows mode GREATLY improves fps in game. Simple Borderless Windows enables you to play in fullscreen windows mode. Edited by aguliondew

Maybe because you're running on a very low screen resolution and the other fellows aren't?

No, its because the video card doesn't make use of every available feature like fog and certain effects. It has always been that way. Games tend to run better on older systems, since the configuration leaves certain things out. It's also a question of actor and object fade. These settings can hit hard on overall performance.

I have a hard time believing that a newer, better computer is performing so much worst than an older one and unless we have more information about the fellow's "$3000 worth of Alienware computer"; we can't tell what might be cause. One thing that is for sure is that gigantibyte have a very good (although old) GPU and he's running at a very, very low resolution - so him getting good FPS isn't a wonder. In fact, I wonder why he's not running it on MAX setting at that resolution (since he mentioned High).

And hence the game provides him with dx9 settings. That's probably all there is to it.

Tried it myself. My 6 year old card does come up with better FPS than my 2 year old one although the newer one is much more powerful. Dx9 is the answer as is the absence of certain area effects, which of course you wouldn't notice if you didn't try both hardware configs.
