ishmaeltheforsaken
Decompiling scripts is not "hacking." You don't get to decide how other people learn, so take your self-important pomposity and kindly shove it.The very first definition of the noun hacking offered by Wiktionary is: "(computing) Playful solving of technical work that requires deep understanding, especially of a computer system." So, yeah, decompiling a script seems to fit the bill pretty perfectly. But no one is saying that decompiling is bad. The Beth.net post in question is actually 100% not about that at all. You're setting up straw men. What people are saying is that decompiling is probably not the best way to learn, and that's true, demonstrably so, especially for a beginner. Your aggression here is unwarranted.

You're setting up straw men. What people are saying is that decompiling is probably not the best way to learn, and that's true, demonstrably so, especially for a beginner. Your aggression here is unwarranted. 1. You're being ridiculous. That is clearly not the definition of hacking that was intended. 2. It doesn't matter what other people pompously declare. For many of us autodidacts, looking at what has already been done provides helpful guidance. Here's one of Skyrim's most accomplished scripters, Chesko, on how he learns: For me the best resources have been: the base game itself, followed by other people’s mods, followed by the Creation Kit wiki. I’ve never been much for learning from videos but I know that’s some people’s preferred method. Really I’m just a tinkerer. I play with things and experiment until I get things working the way I want. …sometimes I come across a mod and it blows me away; like, “How the heck did he do that?!?” Familiar Faces is the most recent example of that for me. So I eagerly take those mods apart just to see how they pulled some things off. That’s always fun. Source: http://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/news/12940/? That is pretty much how I learn, as well. That kind of tinkering is the whole reason I enjoy this hobby. If taking classes and watching tutorials was the only way to learn, I would have given up long ago. That's not fun. Also note that the users in question are not "beginners." Creating patches so that mods with conflicting scripts can run alongside each other is quite advanced. 3. Just so we're clear, other commenters are declaring that posters in that forum are "phony," dishonest "hackers" who are only interested in thievery… and MY aggression is unwarranted? Those posters need to check themselves. They are acting like uncharitable dickwads. Edited November 29, 2016 by lofgren
