XBox 360 Controller for Windows Question

I don't need the "lock on target" or the "next/previous target" features. If you were in a real situation, you wouldn't have that ability anyway, so I don't miss it with the controller. I have a rollball mouse, which works fine for quick movements, but I've grown to enjoy the ease of use with the controller. I do agree that you can not give up the keyboard entirely. You still need to access the command console and photo taking keys with it. Any other game, I would be probably using the keyboard/mouse combination, but with Skyrim, I prefer the controller.

Camera turning, yes, mouse is more accurate for zeroing in on a fine target quickly, as least for me and my thumb.

However, I don't believe anyone who says mouse and keyboard is more fluid. A keyboard is only on or off so your movements are only walk and run. A controller allows you to move your character in a range of speeds from stopped to running and anything in between.

My favorite is to walk like in slow motion when absorbing dragon souls or learning a new shout on a wall.

Can you do that with a keyboard?

Btw, I was always a mouse and keyboard gamer until I got joint problems from always being on my computer. Now I even use the controller while on my desktop and not just gaming. I also stopped sitting a chair or anything too comfortable for most of my time on my computer and a controller allows me to be in any position, even standing or doing yoga.

How do you use a controller to enter console commands or name newly enchanted items? When riding a horse, can you continue to go forward but move the camera to a side view? (I liked to do this while running in 3rd person in Fallout 3, and I think it's possible to enable this feature in Skyrim too.) How easy is gameplay using a controller in 3rd person?

There's also no problem using a k&m while playing video games relaxing on the couch - it's how I always play. I do have a logitech controller that looks like the one for the playstation and can emulate an xbox controller, but I use it mainly for racing and platform games.

To each their own, but to me without mouse-look, Skyrim would have less of an immersion quality. Unless the idea is that we're playing the part of a robot with stiff movements.

Yes, you can move the camera while riding. No, still type with keyboard. It's more like keyboard and controller vs keyboard and mouse.

One thing you're missing out on is the ability to move in a range of speeds, even slow motion, with a controller. Right thumb is like a mouse, but left thumb stick is like a second mouse so you control your motions like you do your camera.

Does anyone know if a controller allows for better sneaking? How is it calculated?

The point I was trying to make is that you can't give up the keyboard entirely, whereas the k&m player never have to switch devices - not that it turns your pc into a 360.

Playing with the controller might be more palatable if they had included a 'lock on target' feature, with buttons for next or previous target. The menus may have been tailored for controllers, but combat certainly wasn't.

I have a normal mouse and I find it very difficult to use it if I don't have a table, a tray or some sort of plane surface to put it on -which unfortunately means that I can't really use it when I'm sitting on my couch. I never had that sort of problem with a controller.

I use a mousepad on a flat book.

And you probably have to carry the book on your lap or next to your elbow or something like that. I'd rather use a controller but that is a personal choice.

There is absolutely no reason to give up the keyboard. It would be more accurate to say that it's not keyboard and mouse but keyboard and controller (for instance some mods that rely on the script extender for Fallout New Vegas or Fallout 3 can be used with the keyboard while the gamepad is activated). You just don't have to use the keyboard all the time.

I've never felt the need for a "lock on target" command. Like I said I've never been much of a console user but I had no problem switching to the controller (going as far as using it with other games). I can say that with a little practice combat represents no significant problem (and personally now I find it easier with the gamepad than with the mouse and this is also true of Fallout 3 or Fallout New Vegas, at first I wasn't that good when it came to aiming with the controller but now I'm probably as good at sniping with a controller as I was with a mouse).

I first played Fallout 3 with the keyboard and mouse and I was relieved when I started using a gamepad because it meant I didn't have to sit at my computer all the time anymore.

Exactly. I don't go as far as using the contoller for other tasks but I understand what your point.

Of course a controller is not meant for everyone. If you have problems with arthritis a controller may not be ideal, if you are an FPS player with a perfectly fine gaming device you probably don't need one. If however you like to be able to move away from your keyboard or want to play in any position then a controller is not a bad choice.

What matters is not which device is better but which device is more useful to you for playing a certain game. The controller is a valid alternative to a mouse for a number of games. It doesn't mean that the mouse has to be thrown away, I still use my mouse to play Civilization but I have to sit at my computer to play this game. The controller offers some comfort especially when you've spend the entire day typing on a keyboard.

Thesapian, I find sneaking very easy with the controller. Snuck through the Lost Knife Hideout the other night and took out every bandit with my Daedra bow (with poison addition).

My personal favorite is when people say mouse/keyboard sucks.. but then you ask them what kind of mouse they are using and they say Trackball.

Well duh... it's not much better than a thumbstick.

Without analog controls on the keyboard, its true that I don't have access to intermediate speeds, but I do have run (normal), sprint (alt), walk (shift or caps), slow (crouch + shift or caps). Those 4 are all one really needs, and gaining intermediate speeds are not worth giving up mouse-look. Not only that, if the game was designed for intermediate speeds all it will take is for someone to create a mod for it to be controlled by the keyboard or mouse wheel.

Is there 3rd person camera zoom with the controller? I'm sure it could be assigned but can you spare the buttons?

Keyboard on my lap with mousepad+book beside me on the couch. Quite comfortable actually. My ideal setup would be on a recliner with 2 telescopic swivel arms holding trays for the keyboard and mouse.

Say what you like concerning the use of the keyboard and mouse for gaming, which I normally use anyway, but when it comes to Skyrim, I find the controller is much better to use for the game. Unless you are using a marble rollball mouse, try spinning 360 real quickly with a normal mouse. You can't. Sure, you can move just as fast through locations with the keyboard movement keys, but I find it much eaiser to precisely time and move with the controller. The game was built with it in mind anyway, so why not use it?

If I didn't have the controller, I would use the keyboard, which I started the game with awhile back. But since I have the controller, I enjoy and like it better. I don't know what you mean by trolling, this is just my view on the controller verses keyboard/mouse.

My first post ever and I just couldn't resist jumping on the forums after reading this... If it isn't trolling then I don't know what it is tbh. If you'd have said that you just prefer controller to K/M, then that would have been an acceptable opinion, but to say it is better generally is blasphemous. Also down right stupid tbh.

Well, that's your opinion and I honor that. But it's not stupid or blasphemous to say so, and I'm not the only one to chime in with statements that indicate their like for the controller over the k/m combo. But, as mentioned in the quoted post, I also use the k/m with other games. For Skyrim, I prefer the ease and comfort of the controller. That's just my view. Again with the trolling thing. I don't know what that is and that wasn't my intention if it means what I think.
