Rennn
Vista is terrible; it'll actually use more RAM than any other operating system. Plus, it's security systems are out of line. Don't use Vista.XP or Windows 7 are fine, but if you install with Windows 7 (or any 64-bit operating system), make sure you don't install Fallout in the Program Files category. That can stop more advanced mods. Don't install to: C:\Program Files (x86)\Bethesda Softworks\Fallout 3Don't install to: C:\Program Files\Bethesda Softworks\Fallout 3 Do install here: C:\Fallout 3 32-bit and 64-bit will run the same for vanilla Fallout, but 64-bit will let you devote more RAM to Fallout 3, so 64-bit is best if you're going to be using texture mods. A lot of texture mods on default allowed RAM (I think by default it's 2GB) will crash your game. 64-bit will let you devote more RAM (up to 3 or maybe 3.5GB) and will stop your game from crashing while using texture mods. Even with a 64-bit operating system, you might still need a workaround to get Fallout 3 to use more RAM.
BlackRampage
XP or Windows 7 are fine, but if you install with Windows 7 (or any 64-bit operating system)Actually it doesn't matters whether the operating system is 64 or 32 bits when it comes to problems with the Program Files directory. The true reason why installing Fo3 in that directory should be discouraged is because of Microsoft's UAC (user Account Control) interfering with it. Since UAC only comes with Vista and Windows 7 however, one does not experience this problem on Windows XP. 32 or 64bitsWell, considering your rig has 4 gigs of RAM, you should get a 64 bit version regardless of whatever OS suits your fancy most. (I personally recommend Win 7) Since Fallout 3 is essentially just a (poorly done) 32 bit console port however, it will not use more then 3 gigs of RAM no matter how much RAM you have installed. Fortunately this handy tool will make it possible to let it use more then 3 gigs: Large Address Aware Enabler Edited January 2, 2012 by BlackRampage
Rennn
But we can all agree that Vista is terrible, and that either XP or Win7 in their 64-bit versions are better when you plan to install mods. :)
