ryanwh
If the CC mods (which will be far more robust than the simple replacer mods being done now) only works via the Steam Workshop, that will be where people go for mods. Other than pirates and porn lovers. Edited January 1, 2012 by ryanwh
JohnColburn
Man, I don't really know why so many people hate on steam. Bethesda makes money by making games, Nexus makes money with ads and premium memberships, Steam makes money by helping game developers market, sell, deliver, and support their games. The goal of the Steam Workshop is not some nefarious plot to make money off of modders, at least not directly. The number one reason to want people modding your game is that it extends the life of the product, sometimes ridiculously so. Bethesda and Steam are both already making money off of modders because a good mod community makes more people want to buy the game. Not just that, it makes people want to buy a legal version; ever noticed how many mods basically require a fully updated game, preferably with all DLCs included? That's a pretty big pain in the ass if you pirated the game, but trivial if you pick it up on steam. Steam and Bethesda are creating the Steam Workshop because it will guarantee increased sales of Skyrim for years to come and it will do so more than the Nexus ever has. Nexus is great and all, but the number of people playing Skyrim dwarfs the number of people using Nexus. Mod awareness among the player base will rapidly approach 100% when the mods are available through Steam, and when people go to the Steam Store page for Skyrim and see "Hundreds of mods available directly from the Steam Workshop!" it's going to be a selling point for some people who never would have bought it otherwise. At the end of the day, I think it's a genius move on the part of Valve/Steam/Bethesda, and I have no problem with more money flowing to the companies that make and support games I enjoy. It seems to me that Steam Workshop will mean more and better patches and DLCs, all while kicking more money over to Bethesda so they can make more awesome games.
