GTX 1080, i5-4690k OC'd to 4.2GHz, 16GB RAM. Awful stuttering on MEDIUM!

I kinda dislike the term useless. The guys that make the maps at Beth are quite good (if only there were correspondingly talented writers). Not really their fault the engine and the design decisions in that area were what they were.

Just a quick question ... Do you have busecombinedobjects=0 (spelling?) set in your .ini file?. According to Bugthesda, that's one of the biggest lag causes in the game. Places like downtown Boston have tens of thousands of doubled, tripled even quadrupled meshes all piled on top of each other to create the "look" of things like trash, debris and garbage. If you use one of the "scrap" mods that allow you do get rid of them (with the aforementioned .ini setting) you can see just how wasteful and redundant the item placement is in those places.

With the combined meshes turned on however, many, many of those streets consists of only a few meshes, so that can significantly improve performance. (Or so Bugthesda claims anyway)

Note: You can though make a MASSIVE increase in your settlement budget, by getting rid of those thousands of grass, grass mound, debris, debris decal, trash etc. items when the setting is turned off, and you're using a scrap everything mod..

I don't think I'll play with that one. I've been reading some bad feedback regarding it. One uploader on Youtube recorded an almost half FPS loss from disabling that.

Been reading some bad feedback regarding 'Scrap Everything' mods too. Seems they can cause disappearing world spaces when walking through the places objects once were.

Yeah, I am amazed at the level of detail in Boston, I keep getting lost down the alleys and streets. It is so open and interconnected without loading screens. Stalking the city feels similar to Halo:ODST did when exploring New Mombasa. Though much more interesting.

I have improved my performance as best as I am able so far. Almost all of my stutter is gone (I am reluctant to look out at the city from the large skyscraper Strong is found in, so not sure about all of it being gone) and the graphical quality isn't that much different. Though from my settings, you'd never guess I had a high-end PC... Guess I'll accept this and enjoy the game. Dropping shadow resolution to 1024 helped a lot. f***ing shadows man... Skyrim gave me hell with them too.

UPDATE: Seeing as though the issue lies with shadows, an acceptable trade-off that has removed stuttering for me is to change iShadowMapResolution to 1024 then fDirShadowDistance to 4000 and finally fBlendSplitDirShadow to 500. This will lower quality but remove resolution pop-in.
