It can be slightly lower or higher depending on what you can re-use, such as monitors, keyboard, mouse, speakers, ect. If you go more, you're usually over-paying for newer model parts, if you go much less (under $800) you'll probably need to upgrade or replace significant parts of the computer after 2-3 years (or 4 months for the whole thing if you are looking in the $500 range). For pre-built, avoid Dell, and for God's sake, don't even bother with Alienware (Dell with a fancy logo that they charge you 2-3 times more for).
