  1. 1. Would you like to see a steam punk mod made?

Recommended Posts

I apologize if this has already been suggested, I tried poking about a bit and running some searches and it looked like it had not been brought up...

It would be amazing if a skilled modder, or even better a small group of modders, were to make a steam punk themed mod for Skyrim.

We're talking goggles, outfits, armors, weapons, gadgets, perhaps a steam punk bike... I have been in love with steam punk for just over a decade when I first found out it was a "thing". A decent quest line and the ability to use the resources to make additional quests for other modders would also be lovely. The real icing on the cake would be making a new crafting section (if it can be done), perhaps named "Steam-craft", that is central to the quest line and used to make many of the cool gadgets. I don't know if there is a lot of demand for this, but the idea nearly makes me salivate! There have been a handful of good steam punk games down the years, but not enough imho, and seeing a good mod in this spiffy engine would be sweet.

I have no skill with drawing at all and I have never learned how to do any of the tools that make modding possible. Unfortunately I have too many other commitments to learn the skills much less master them for the foreseeable future.... :-/ hence posting on New Years Eve between bouts of food and booze ;-)

Sorry the post is meandering and longish, booze seems to make me think I'm eloquent :P

Yeah. I'm a sucker for Steampunk, but I'd rather have a bunch of Dwemeri doohickies to play around with instead of some random Victorian stuff that wouldn't fit in.

I'm not very far in yet, but the Dwemer stuff looked pretty steam-punkish. There might be a way to make a quest line off that for bringing a lot more steam punk into Skyrim more organically. Personally, I'm interested in seeing it whether it's lore friendly or not, but I'm sure there are people who would rather it fit the lore if it's going to be done.

Well we all remember Sotha Sil and his clockwork place in Mournhold yeah? Great influence and hell, it's time Bethesda starts adding the stuff in slowly, figure the world can't stay the same way forever, right? Granted it's a dark time now and look what happened to our world when Rome fell roughly two thousand years ago. But there should be some change/innovation in Tamriel. Modding is great and all, but lets throw some science into this world and see how it shakes it up.

Ehhh, I know this is really nit picking but I'm really into history.

The industrial revolution could never have happened in Ancient Greece or Rome. This is because of social reasons, I.e. slaves are cheap so why do I want to build a labour saving device and both societies looked upon "high technology" as a curiosity, no one ever saw any partical use for it it was something you brought out at a party to show all of your drunk friends. There are also technological reasons, they didn't have the machining capacity to produce all of the small gears, gizmos, sprockets and other pieces to make anything "steampunk." Lastly, how would you desiminate all of this information, copying books by hand is horriblely inefficent and takes forever.

I actually think that the time during and after the next Thalmor War would be an excellent time for tech to advance, after all they have a printing press (atleast the Black Horse Curior does), various Universities/Colleges (if not technologically inclined they could definately use the Imperial College of the Voice, or College of Winterhold as models), labour will be scarce during such a huge war so there would be an incentive to create labour saving devices in order to free more people up for the Legions/Stormcloaks/Army/Whatever and increase the production of supplies, and they have to come up with someway to gain an advantage of the extremely magically inclined and powerful Altmer (after all technology can be mass produced and any idiot can use it well and learn to use it in less time than magic). So all and all I see this entire conflict as an extremely good way to start introducing technological advancements its very similar to how the Renissance started in Europe.

Thanks for reading my rant.

I appreciate you putting some thought into it... One thing that causes the scenario to differ a bit here from historical precedent in our own world is that they already have very powerful and useful devices in the Dwemer ruins that could easily inspire some of them to look deeper into the tech and provide a springboard for this kind of thing to take shape. The other thing about steam punk is it assumes that you can make steam tech far more versatile and potent than it really is. Essentially you have to allow for far more portable steam power sources and greater "oomph" out of steam applications. Perhaps soul gems could be used somehow to provide the heat source for generating the steam? Based on the steam puffs from the Dwemer machines the game already has readily available resources for animations to support this kind of stuff. As to the book copying, totally true, but they seem to have largely ignored this in TES, there are books all over the place, lol.

The message emerging here seems to be that those who want lore cohesion and easier suspension of disbelief would really like the mod to rise organically out of what is already present if it is going to be made. That said, it seems like any modder that decides to tackle this would be best served by using the Dwemer as the starting point for any quest and story integration. Please continue to provide ideas and critiques so that if someone does decide they would like to develop this idea they have a handy resource for suggestions and inspiration ready to go! :-)
