It's about business and making a profit. Not on the mods, but on selling more copies of the game that uses the mods because they are right there, in-line with the Steam client, just click and done. For every modder there are 10000 mod users, and for every mod user there is 100 gamers who don't have a clue about mods.

To be honest, I used to hate on Steam like a lot of you are doing, but after NV and now Skyrim, I actually like Steam for the convenience of never needing to have an install disk handy, being able to get releases the second they get released, and the game overlay that allows me to chat up my friends while playing. It's a win-win for me. Having a Steam account has not resulted in any of my private info being sold to marketers, nor do I get spammed with their marketing. I honestly think most people who hate Steam only do so out of ignorance, and some because of another reason.

Out of ignorance? I don't think so.

Maybe it's the annoying autopatching when it's supposed to be disabled or the fact that having a social network application running when playing a single player game is something that some of us find utterly useless?

I would rather have a good old DVD check instead of the obligation of constantly running an application (offline in order not to mess with my modded games).

Put it in offline mode and never worry about it again. Even online, it does nothing to any mods I have for every game I play and mod (all of them). I don't care if you prefer a disk or not, that's each individuals preference, I just find a lot of the reasoning behind hating on Steam is a bit closed minded, and ridiculous speculation of what it "could" be doing or what a "for profit" company might do in some distant future. Hate me for not being concerned about Steam, I don't care!

That's probably a healthy attitude (i.e. not to care) although caution may not be ill advised.

IMO there is a fine line between expressing concern about a third party program keeping track of your gaming activity and being utterly paranoid about some nefarious capitalistic schemes.

Anyway the issue with mods is when a patch sneaks upon you and renders your mods unplayable. I can only salute the dedication of the team responsible for the script extender since they always seem to manage to release a new version very swiftly whenever the game is updated but I maintain that we should be able to choose when we want to update the game (or not for that matter).

Truth be told after seeing what bugs a patch like 1.2 can cause it's hard to have much faith in any autopatching process...

As others have said, you misunderstand their statement. They just mean that our ability to use the Creation Kit will begin in January, not specifying when in January.

Personally, I expect it to come out near the end of January. They have little incentive to release it sooner since they will have kept their word even if they release it on January 31st. I'll only be annoyed if the delay is just due to Steamworks. I have absolutely no interest in using Steamworks, and want Steam to have as little to do with Skyrim and the CK as possible. I already go out of my way to run Skyrim WITHOUT Steam. (I've used Steam plenty in the past, and I don't like using it if I don't have to.)

I'm just finding other things to distract me while I wait. :)
