The Slog

I have always neglected this place but today I finished off massive upgrades to it. However, I still cannot get any of the 7 Ghouls there to man either a Guard Post, a Bar or a Trader stall. They say "okay" but carry on tending the crops. Does anyone know why this is ?

Sometimes the game lags out when assigning settlers, I've had it take up to to ten minutes before i get the "this resource is now assigned" message at the top of the screen. Make sure you get that message before exiting build mode, otherwise it means the game was still processing ... something .... and the assignment hasn't stuck. Also, many of the default residents of The Slog have very complex (and very strict) sandbox packages I think, so they tend to wander a lot.

I just usually wait until I get a few more settlements up my sleeve, and then send all Ghouls to be generic "settlers" at the Slog. They tend to behave normally.

Thanks for the replies. I don't have any mods which directly affect the Slog and the only modded place I have a similar issue is the Castle where settlers will not man the Guard Post which is a desk and chair , they just walk around on patrol. At Nuka World Red Rocket I can't get them to man a guard post at the south end road entrance but they will man a post at the north end. I've built a radio beacon at the Slog now and managed to get 3 new settlers all of whom work normally. It's really strange and in fact in my last playthrough I had the same issue with Wiseman not manning a guard post.

It's occurred to me that in the course of rebuilding the Slog I have scrapped pretty much everything from inside the building and replaced their beds so I suppose that could be something to do with it but I had the issue when they had their original filthy beds.

Also Arlen Glass won't give me the quest to find his daughters holotape.

Any of the "named" NPC's will generally have far more complex (and just plain unknowable) sandbox packages, so getting them to do anything is a chore (looking at you Sturgess!!!) And most of the default Slog residents aren't "settlers" but something else, so they probably also have weird sandbox packages as well.

As for Arlen, not sure about him ... I've always gotten the Holotape and the Giddy-Up Buttercup, before going to see him, so both quests start and finish almost at the same time for me (after the related quest dialogues of course)

nuka world required sacrificing 3 settlements. Guess who was the first to go. After killing all the raiders I went back to the slog and wiped out the raiders there and started recruiting all new settlers. Arlen Glass was a total disappointment I never did see a working buttercup on any playthrough. I thought it would be another dog like companion or pack horse.

I hear yah ... But it gets me right in the feels, when he hears his daughter's voice again. And he's so happy when you give him the box of parts (ugh, right in dem feelz again)

You know what would be cool though? An actual animated and working Giddy-Up Buttercup toy as a "Happiness Pet" for settlements (like the cat)
