DeluxeSux
So if you're not just trolling, what is your issue with Steam sir? The convenience of the game updating automatically? The ability to search the web whilst playing it in case you get stuck, because we all know what happens when you Alt+Tab in a non-Steam Bethesda game. Or is the achievements, which do nothing, but are nice little bragging metals on occasion. Coming to a message board and saying something sucks without giving a reason is trolling sir. Now, if you wish to correct me, then please elaborate on the issue you have with Steam, and then, I will be more than happy to retract my pervious statement.*spelling and grammar correction edit*What I'm saying is the piss far outweighs the wine. Sir. Again, I must know, what is the issue that you have with Steam? One must elaborate or one shall remain branded as a troll. One must also drink tea with their pinky out... I hate it. It's a chore. When I want something doing I'll do it myself. It'll be playing the game for me in a few years. They should have simply added a feature that lets you reliably get to desktop and back instead of adding more coin and bending over for Steam. Happy now? Illiad86
Consumers shouldn't be forced to install third party software in order to install a game which they have purchased, piracy is going to happen no matter what, why not just have a CD check like most games for your DRM and include a updater? Because it's far easier to pirate CD check games. Steam ones are harder to "crack" because of the little steam file that's included with the games. Companies went with Steam for that reason. It still can be done, no matter what it is, but pirates would rather take the easy route than try and get pass Steam's DRM and possibly getting banned off Steam for doing so. I dunno what all the hate is. I mean, I liked Steam before it became a game store, but even after it has, it's not all that bad. You don't have to be online to play single player games, but it's still a bit annoying logging onto it to play my single player games. I don't mind PC online gaming services, its good to have norm services instead of each game being different and having downtime etc. I just don't see why you HAVE to have Steam installed to install the game you should have a choice to play the game offline and manually patch your game or have a updater away from Steam. Truth is, there is no such thing as a working copy protection. Problem is, the paying customers always pay the price. First it was intrusive apps that changed more than just the game settings, now it's some web service collecting your gambling habits for whatever the small print allows. The only half working protection would be to stream the games.
coreypikes
I've been using Steam since 2005 and it's come along way. Yes, it is a form of DRM, but in my humble opinion, it's far better than SecuROM or SafeDisk. And yes there are game hosted on Steam that use more than the it as DRM (Grand Theft Auto 4 has three types of DRM if I recall correctly). However, I still cannot understand the hate that many newcomers seem to have for it. You dislike automatic updates, they can be disabled. Going to be away from an internet connection or your downloading something else using a different program, play in offline mode. Most complaints I've ever seen about Steam, are simple issue that can be resolved if you go into the user settings or game properties. So, please elaborate why Steam is the tool of the Devil for me.
ModelV
*Searches around the room until he finds the troll magnet and shuts it off*I think having the ability to download every damn game ever made for the PC easily, easy installation of DLCs and patches, easy repairs on all my games files, and easy access to my very large games library with on click on my desktop outweigh the non existent issues received from auto updates and other unmentioned issues. Hell whenever I need to pop in a CD key for my really old games steam opens up a tiny pop up in the lower right corner giving me the key. *Fires a warning shot at the trolls* Edited January 2, 2012 by ModelV

I don't want to log on twice to a game I've paid for, when I want an update I'll update myself... just let me know one's available. Sue the Pirates, take it to the courts, blah blah... It's annoying to paying customers all this automated rubbish.

Plenty people playing Skyrim without steam.

There was a time boys and girls, if you lost the jewel case or instruction booklet to your game, you either bought a new copy or prayed you copied the CD key and saved it somewhere else. I've got two copies of Diablo 2 because of this very reason.
