Nifskope Questions(s)

I've tried reading the many tutorials on the nea about this but I can't quite seem to find an (updated) and answer to this ...

First: Is it possible, with just Nifskope, to make one small part of an armor 'invisible' by deleting the corresponding part of the texture file? i.e. many of the revealing armor mods still have the whole armor mesh It's just that some parts are invisible. Like 'hiding' the cloth skirt/flap at the from of the male Steel Plate Armor

Second Is there a keyboard shortcut or 'view' mode which allows you to select only one specific 'triangle' of the mesh ? At the moment I can only click all the mesh or none of it

I'm no expert at NifSkope and I still have lots to learn as to how to use it, but...from what you are describing, I do not believe that you can 'edit' the mesh using NifSkope. You will need to use a modeling application to do that. I could be wrong on this, so I hope someone who really knows will step in here.

I would also like to know how to do this, apparently NifSkope is just one of the programs you need, the other is Blender 2.49b or 3Ds Max as I have heard, the only problem is I haven't been successful in opening a Skyrim Nif in blender, although I can open a Morrowind Nif in Blender. I can however view a Skyrim nif in NifSkope, but only from the mods I have downloaded, I can't seem to find the Nifs from Vanilla Skyrim....

@BarefootWarrior: I was afraid that might be the case ... I had a look at a mesh i download from here, one of the 'skimpy' female elven armor mods, and they had somehow made upper thigh part invisible but kept the skirt visible just by deleting/trimming that part of the texture, and I was hoping you only needed Nifskope to do this sort of thing, you know kind of - right click on specific triangle - click texture - click assign/remove and hey presto invisibility! But I guess not

@kingchris20: I'm not sure I understand .. I use the BSA viewer/extractor (I think it was originally made for FO3?) available somewhere around here and open up the Skyrim - meshes.bsa file in the Skyrim root directory and it has all the models (.nif's) you could want

BSA viewer/extractor, thanks! I'm very new to this stuff, and have been doing quite a bit of searching for how to mod the skyrim Nifs, but have been largely unsuccessful.

There is a post on how to add custom weapons in game somewhere on this front page, it has a video, and I think it would be useful for what you need as well

Just a small bit of advice before you start 'extracting' textures or meshes. Copy the texture or mesh compressed directory from your skyrim data folder and paste (make a copy) of it somewhere, example..in your documents folder and then extract from there. That way if you have an 'oops' (and it has happened *raises hand*) you won't screw up your game.

As far as I can tell from what I read, you have to open the mesh up in NifSkope (the newest version) and prepare it for importing into Blender or 3DMax, and you have to have the plug in scripts for either to import a nif file. Or convert it to and obj file (convert nif to obj) and then import into Blender or 3D Max. You can convert a nif file to an obj file using NifSkope, but I am unclear on the process as of yet. I'm still trying to get this part figured out. As it is now, I can open a nif file (mesh) from skyrim into NifSkope, but I can't even assign a texture to it, damned if I know why, so I still have a ways to go. I'm used to an older version of NifSkope and am having some issues learning the new version, but I wasn't that hot on NifSkope to begin with.

@KingChris20. I can open nif files from Oblivion into Blender or 3D max with out any problems, but the nif files from skyrim are a different version of the nif format. or so I have heard, that is why they have to be 'prepared' in NifSkope before you can import to either Blender or 3D max. I was a bit confused by this as well. There is a tutorial file explaining this on the Nexus site, and it has been a big help explaining this. Here it is...

For texture work (and if you have Photoshop) you will need the Nvidia plug-ins for Photoshop to open up DDS files (textures). You can also get the scripts needed for Gimp to open DDS files too, and Gimp is a free application. I am very surprised at how powerful and useful Gimp is and for DDS (texture) work, it will work just fine. But don't give up, it is a never ending learning process. Good luck...to all of us.

Thanks BarefootWarrior ... It would have been sssooo much easier if Bethesda had just included a full body under every armor/clothing mesh and set the files so that they could have 'invisible' parts where needed <sigh> ah well ... Maybe I should make a 'mod request' that someone create a 'modding resource' of every outfit in game with a body ... Looks like I might have to learn how to use Blender <shudder> I played around a bit with it a while ago, but <egad!> it's a cumbersome, clumsy, counter intuitive program to use.

Guess what? I didn't understand what you meant by this until today. It was one of those 'wtf' moments when I saw what you were taking about. I could not believe what I was looking at. I am creating a modified texture of the 'ragged pants' or prisoners pants to make a pair of ragged shorts as it were just to experiment with alpha textures. The alpha in my texture is fine, but...umm..well, there is no butt...or anything else for that matter. Nothing, lower legs and then nothing up to the waist? I don't get it, the avatars are 'wearing' the clothes or armor items, and they couldn't give a full body mesh? This is the damnedest thing I have ever seen.

Sooo..I do have a full nude male mod that came up recently and it is nicely done, thought I'd try to 'copy branch' in NifSkope of my modifed pants over to the nude body mesh (after a certain part was removed  ) and I can't get that to work either. If I wasn't confused before, I sure am now.

Then I tried to modify the 'underwear' nif and to see if I could copy the properties of the loin cloth thing and use that to place my modified pants to the underwear nif...guess what again? There isn't anything under the loin cloth either. Gonna have to write this project off for a while, shame too, made a nice texture. :wallbash:
