abaris
every Single Player game will get boring at some point. Thats pretty much a "law". The question is, how long do you need to enjoy a game to call it a success? There's another question. How do you play a certain game? I found myself playing Skyrim as a shooter after finding out there's nothing to be gained by rising through the ranks. That's fun, but as it si with shooters. There's zero replayability if everything you can possibly do leads to the exact same result. This thread, at least as far as I'm aware of, and I have read most of the posts, isn't about Skyrim being a bad game. It is about the game making promises but never crossing the finish lines. Especially when it comes to roleplaying your character and choices.
Shantih
This thread, at least as far as I'm aware of, and I have read most of the posts, isn't about Skyrim being a bad game. It is about the game making promises but never crossing the finish lines. Especially when it comes to roleplaying your character and choices. It seems to me that it is an accurate view of the problem with Skyrim. Seriously I've grown tired of all the arguments comparing Skyrim to Oblivion. Some players can't see the good things in Skyrim and can basically argue that everything was better in Oblivion (I'm not just saying people who want more stats but people complaining about quests being better, dialogues being better, the story being better or level scaling being better). I get that they've come to love Oblivion after playing it for so many years but Oblivion was a very flawed game when it first came out and despite numerous mods improving many many things it still has some serious flaws and the main quest is certainly nothing to write home about. Give Skyrim some time for some updates and big mods and its true potential will become apparent.
abaris
Give Skyrim some time for some updates and big mods and its true potential will become apparent. That's what I hope for, since there are certain indications for true potential that haven't been present in Oblivion. Right now they are just that - indications. I don't get the hype surrounding Oblivion either, since in it's vanilla state it left me bored rigid. Things were different with Morrowind, but that was because back in 2002 there hasn't been anything to compare it with. I played a heavily modded version for quite some years. But then again, no reason for nostalgia, since the world has moved on since then.
Shantih
I really liked Morrowind because it was different and had an outstanding setting. Back then we didn't have many alternatives (Neverwinter Nights was simply too linear). Oblivion was very nice to look at when it came out but I never cared much for the very generic setting (which was a big letdown after Morrowind) except for Shivering Isles (which I loved) but it took me a hundred mods to enjoy playing Oblivion and personally I've had more fun playing Skyrim without any mods than Oblivion with all these mods. I'm certainly not saying that Skyrim is perfect but IMO it's more like a diamond in the rough.

Especially when it comes to roleplaying your character and choices. there is no role playing at all in this game, unless you play a 1 man army nord hero the whole game is built around the player being a nord npcs can't distingish between races and treat every player controlled character as if they are a nord.... (why are dark elf characters treated exactly the same as nord characters in a racist city like windhelm?, even get asked "are you one of them skyrim for the nords folk") no choices, no concequences, quest all end the same, beth made a great world yet removed the player from it so much it's unreal, bring back fallout writers, at least they can do a choice, reputation and karma system that actually effect the world around you and makes you feel apart of it Edited January 5, 2012 by WhipDiddyWhip
ermacos
The title of this topic made me read it almost all and I agree / disagree with many of you about some things.. Not about if the game is boring or not. I read about game developers cant be bothered much with quality quests and content, as they have to fit the entire game in a console dvd, or release dates to get some more bucks, etc. True, but you also forget that YOU buying this consoles, you feeding them, so why blame them.. Gamers should blame themselves about it! Stop buying consoles! Stop feeding them with this mania they got, then maybe we see quality games again. I personally support only Nintendo because I grow up with Nintendo since 88-89 with black and white gameboy and still this company is away from what others (Microsoft and sony), did and do, to the game industry! You think piracy is the fault of what’s going on?? You’re so mistaken, so wrong guys, YOU are wrong!!! They promoted piracy, so they can find a reason to force things, to simplify things, more like terrorism in politics lol, It’s the same thing!!.. An example is the today companies like, steam, origin (not that much), etc.. Think about that this companies that have nothing to do with game industry, forcing gamers to pay bills to be able to play games and I mean phone bill and internet connection provider. This automatically is a promotion for a pirated version of any game that supports these networks. Because simply not all of us (Gamers) have internet connection! Also the software is useless if you stop having internet connection! So they don’t care about it! They don’t point to pc gamers and they don’t really care about piracy! They control piracy. Piracy is also an advertisement, because if the game is good, then YOU will buy it.. I am 33 years old and I know some things about marketing.. lol Only the 1/10 or 2/10 of the entire world is using internet! Why you think they don’t care!! Because companies like steam, etc, promoting console fever and consoles does need internet connection to play! But they do brake very easy and we do need much more money than a pc, to keep up playing, overall. The titles are more expensive, the consoles brake much more easier, we do buy more peripherals in time, we do renew the console every 1-2 years, we do pay fees.. etc.. So stop buying consoles! Stop supporting this madness! I am happy that I am not supporting the 2 big consoles in the market, as they do react badly to my gaming experience. Well that’s my personal opinion about it and I wish for 2012 to see companies like steam, etc.. to become smoke till next year!! Also I have a question for you all, as I am a bit old and cant translate all the things I’ve read here.. what is CK??? ps: I send an email to Bethesda couple of months ago and explained them why I dont want to buy a steam version of the game, also asked them, if they do have an offline legit version, to order. They answered me back that the only way to play offline, is to obtain an xbox or ps3 version of the game. Sorry for my English, I am not English and I am also dyslectic. abaris
So stop buying consoles! Stop supporting this madness! I am happy that I am not supporting the 2 big consoles in the market, as they do react badly to my gaming experience. I never bought a console, never will. And I daresay, since this is a modders board, hardly anyone will be on the console or promote consoles.

Arcadiast
@ermacos This is not a discussion about basic principles of gaming alltogether but a specific discussion of Skyrims gameplay. Considering Steam or Piracy, there are many many many discussions made and being made. So i would advise you to join the specific Forums/Topics to be heard. This does not mean I do not agree with you by the way, just that it does not fit quite in this Topic and would cause unnecessary "Heat". what is CK??? CK is short for "Construction Kit". This is a Tool from Bethesda to customize the game (with a lot more options than you would have normally).
Shantih
bring back fallout writers, at least they can do a choice, reputation and karma system that actually effect the world around you and makes you feel apart of it Well Fallout New Vegas has a very bad karma system. I love this game and feel that it is a true Fallout game in the spirit of Fallout 1 and 2 but that has to be said. On the subject of Skyrim it all depends on whether the game checks or not. I've been taken aback by some comments that were directed at Nords when I wasn't playing one. I have to say that it was often corrected in the following sentence but it gave a weird impression. Also I wish guards would comment on the weapon you're carrying instead of the actual skill level your character have. If your character is carrying a big two handed sword but is better with a bow guards are going to say things about your character preferring bows and that simply doesn't make any sense. It's a little thing but that is annoying after a while.
