The Skyrim Arena

So every Elder Scrolls game until now has featured an arena. Skyrim may probably feature one in its upcoming DLC, but if so I doubt it will include the features I'd like to suggest. The Creation Kit is coming out this month, and I'm certain someone will immediately start constructing an arena mod. If you're that person, here are some things to consider:

- Multiplayer fights.

I think we can all agree there is no harm in having multiplayer in Skyrim restricted to the arena. Players would hook up online and search for others wanting to do battle. Once it's organised, they are set with all of their own weapons and spells to fight each other. Like in Oblivion, they can't loot each other. No messing with each other's games.

- The ability to challenge civilians in the arena.

When a person hates you so much they'd desire to legally kill you, have the option of settling it in a match. Sometimes they may also confront you. And as you both accept, a match is scheduled and an announcement is made (like flyers posted on city walls). If you fail to show, all of the spectators there will dislike you. You might even make it a crime.

- Have actual civilians spectate.

If it means adding new NPCs, do so. Some can be regulars, and others can be coming from the other side of Skyrim to watch a match. They all bet on who they think will win. The outcome of each fight also determines how much they pocket or lose.

- Team selections and creating teams.

Don't just join the Blue Team. What about the Yellow Team, or Green or Red team? You could get to know who's in what team and make that a deciding factor. Or alternatively, recruit civilians to start your own elite team.

With that, you could also incorporate melees, say 2-on-2. Otherwise, team members could compete in fights at their own time as scheduled by the arena management.

- Have all fights scheduled.

I know you may at first dislike not being able to witness and bet on a fight whenever you like, but it makes fights evermore special. They shouldn't be rare, but at least at certain times where the outcome of each fight strengthens or weakens each team. Using the flyer idea, those could be posted on city walls or designated boards to let the player know what's going on.

- Tournaments

Whether the player is a part of a tournament or not, teams will fight each other, combatants will die, and after each season a winner will always get determined and claimed the arena 'champion'. Typically the semifinals and finals would pack more spectators.

A faction and ranks would still be commonplace. But I believe these features could make for an incredible mod.

What do you think?

Disagree with the multiplayer. Maybe multiiple NPCs like in a huge free for all brawl or team battles...

But conoles + mods = people having invincibility and amazing perks/weapons. Wouldn't work unless everyone got set stats and weapons and it was completely skill based.

Plus, playing against AI is different than humans so playing a thief/assassin would be gimped. I can sneak right in front of a guard and he wont see me... but a player isn't that stupid.

I like the rest though.

I posted a few ideas here: http://www.thenexusforums.com/index.php?/topic/517390-arena-mod/

I'm no modder, but I like to brainstorm on ideas with others. Some good, some bad. I also have to agree wiht phantur about the MP element. Not to say people would deliberately cheat, but there's that option. And where there's an option, there's opportunity. Yes, an arena in Skyrim would definitely be needed.

If the job's too heavy to tackle by modders, BethSoft shold step in & make it DLC.

The multiplayer would not be a bad idea, but what about the people who are lagging in the game due to being far away from the hosted servers (which could also be used to exploit security risks). Though in multiplayer the hosted server could disable console, using the ck or something. This mod seems very well though out and if it was ever made I would download it. Then there should also be the idea of YOU betting on NPC's fighting against each other.

As for the balance, each player is stripped in their locker room (or something similiar) and are given a choice of what items to pick, but the items would have to have the same stats, so people who would prefer using a mace just cause they feel more natural using it would have the same damage as someone wielding a sowrd. Same goes for the armour.

Then there are WIZARD FIGHTS in which players are only allowed to use spells they have in their inventory. They are both given robes and thats it evrything else is stripped away.

Of course when you finish the fight you take all your items from your locket chest.

The winner then progresses rank (this is an idea) and if they loase their rank is deducted. The rank wil depend on their title. And at the end if they have hit the final number of rank 100/10000 they get the position as owner of the ring and can schedule fights in that area and win and be the bookie.

The multiplay thingy could be for multiplayer spectators and they could bet aganst each other on the npc's fighting.

Thats my 2 cents.

-Cheers

I was hoping to make an arena myself, I've got it all planned out - the designs and how it looks, etc. I don't want to spoil anything but.. we have FUS RO DAH & The Throat of the World.. I'm pretty sure there's someone missing.

By Azura, by Azura, By Azura! I can't wait for the CK.

This is my top priority for Skyrim modding. I'll make an arena mod with 5 different arenas (I'll copy some "already in good shape for an arena" sections, like the Temple of Kynareth in Whiterun, the Helgen Keep Central Room and one of those dog fight dens from bandit forts), a Champion from all settlements (eg. Kynesgrove, Ivarstead, Rorikstead, Solitude) with additional faction champions (from Thalmor, Stormcloak, Forsworn, Imperial, Greybeard, Vigilants, etc.) to battle against, and there'll be a Headsman making sure rules are at play at all times (no poisoning weapons, no magic, no potions, just brutal combat). If the fight goes foul Headsman decapitates both combatants (and you have to reload your save). Just duels, no team fights (yet).

Weaponry and armor are balanced (you start with no armor and work your way up, arena is not level dependent and all gear will be "arena leveled" -> you get better armor and weapons with each win), I'll most likely fiddle with Skyrim's combat a bit to make it more suitable for dueling - blocking needs to mitigate damage more but strain stamina and so forth in that manner.

It'll be called "Clash of Champions: Prologue" and you'll hear from me soon when the Creation Kit is released and I'll begin on building on the concept. Glad to see I'm not the only one who thought of a proper arena mod.
