If you used the default instalation paths for Skyrim and steam, most mod files should go in:

C:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\common\skyrim\Data

Some game engine enhancing mods like the ENB series or Skyboost will need to go in the Skyrim folder.

To make it easier you can also use the Mod Manager to install them

To get the 'Data Files" to work on the Launcher you first need to locate the SkyrimPrefs.ini file which by default in Windows 7 is here:

C:\Users\<your user name>\Documents\My Games\Skyrim

This is just a text file which you can edit with notepad

Open the file and look for a line like this

[Launcher]

bEnableFileSelection=1 ( make sure it is =1 and not =0)

If there is DEFINITELY no [Launcher] line you can add it in at the bottom, I'd recommend using the 'search' function in notepad though, just to make sure

Make sure to check the file properties and make sure it is not set to 'read only' then save and done
