Video Card Decision..

I would be careful with the power supply. The AMD site says for a single 6790:

 

'500 Watt or greater power supply with two 75W 6-pin PCI Express® power connectors recommended'.

 

I am not sure if it would work out properly so it may not be a good idea to test it out, especially if you don't want to risk blowing out your current power supply. I would recommend holding on to your money for just a bit longer. The graphics card could drop down in price even more and you could get a proper power supply for the new card. It would be a huge bummer if you put the new card in and something went wrong. Good luck with it and have fun :happy: . Sorry to be a bit of a downer here but I would just hate for you to spend the money if there is a chance that it wouldn't work.

 

 

My power supply has been my biggest concern.

I'm wondering if I decided to go with the Geforce GTX 460 instead, would my power supply be sufficient? I cant find any requirements on the Nvidia page.

I've decided the HD 6770 is the card I'm getting. Its in my price range and will greatly upgrade the GT 210 I have now. I think my PSU should be ok until i can get a new one in a month or so. I used this link http://www.thermaltake.outervision.com/Power and it calculated that on 100% load, my pc would use 328w with the 6770. Thats with each and every component at full load.

 

Am I correct in assuming this?

those things arent 100% (though that is very similar to the one i used) its good to assume they under estimate. but even if thats so, you have ~70W of head room, so you should be all set. just when you can, it cant hurt to upgrade to a 500W PSU and when that time comes, i recommend saving a bit. PSUs are the one component you dont wanna get whatever is the cheapest and whatever should just cover it. for a 500W expect ~$75 for a good sturdy and worth it PSU :) Edited January 12, 2012 by hoofhearted4

Lol, nope. Sold a 1tb WD Caviar Black HDD out of my file server. Gave me an extra $60 to play with :)
