metasyntactic
It seems to me like Bethesda kind of dropped the ball on this one... how is it that I can wade into combat, slicing through shields, armor and bone, and my sword is still "flawless"?! I'd like to request a mod that introduced realistic damage to weapons. The way I imagine this would work is like so: You improve a weapon. Through combat the weapon quality drops a tier. If you maintain the weapon by getting to a grind wheel, you can restore the previous level without needing new materials. If, however, you allow the weapon to drop two tiers through lack of maintenance, you will need to improve the weapon normally (requires ingots) A true warrior would refresh the edge by sharpening it before it was damaged enough to drop a level though. Combat effectiveness would depend on you being mindful of the condition of your blade. You know: This is my sword. There are many like it, but this one is mine. Well, that's the idea anyway. Sibyllina
On Oblivion, we had to repair the weapons and armors. If broken, it wasn't giving any bonus / armor anymore. And the weapons were not usable anymore. We could even repair them "more" than 100/100, and it was like an upgrade. On Skyrim, they kept the upgrade's idea but wiped the repair's one. That's sad because, as you said, every warior HAS to repair and polish his weapons if he doesn't want to break it.
babis8142
That's an excellent idea! If only someone makes it I'd be the first to download it. As soon as I see it anyway
Aarkon
+1 on this it would give a perk to using maces/blunt weapons over swords and axes too

Make it so you can increase the stats of your weapon to be equivalent to the next level of improvement, but this drops over time. I love how there are just random grind-wheels all over the world, even in dungeons - it makes sense with all these iron and steel weapons being used by everyone that there are tools for their maintenance lying around. I often sit at one and "sharpen" my blades for RP (also I find grinding soothing for some reason), but I hate how this is not backed up by game mechanics. Meh I like the system the way it is. My berserker on Oblivion had to carry so many hammers to repair his equipment in the beginning that I couldn't carry anything after awhile without become encumbered. Also degradation was equivalent to your strength so if you had a huge amount of strength through gear weapons broke in one or two hits. it got to the point where my berserker ended up punch people to death instead of using weapons because they would do nothing but break and I wanted a barbarian not a pugilist =P. But to he his own, we all have our cross to bear.

You do it at a location.2) Balance is key with the degradation thing... obviously two hits before weapon destruction is stupid, but that leads me to 3...3) I'm also not talking weapons degrading to uselessness. They just degrade to their base level. Edited January 30, 2012 by metasyntactic
kingchris20
I'm all for a mod being created like this, to each their own, but I don't believe I would like it much, weapons losing their effectiveness over time is realistic, but I'm not sure I'd want to deal with having to repair it all the time, I mean I'd give it a shot to see how it feels, but at first thought, I don't think it would be much fun to have to "remember to fix" my weapons. This is actually my first TES game, or any Bethesda for that matter, I recently converted from consoles and FPS games, so I've no experience with the old way. But I'd certainly give it a chance!
