Stopping Followers Using Bows

Hi there, first time poster here.

I currently have Mjoll as a follower, and even though I have given her steel plate armour and a flawless great axe she insists on using her bow. What usually happens is that we encounter enemies and she starts with axe in hand, but she shifts to bow to fire from a distance, but then she never changes to her axe, she stays in archery mode for the whole battle. As can be imagined, this is pretty useless since on the few occasions she does use her axe she cuts through the enemy like paper.

Is there a way (cheat or otherwise) to stop followers using bows entirely? Using the PC version.

Thanks.

Open your console, click on your follower and type "showinventory". Your follower may have a quantity of hunting bows, so take a look at the id number and quantity of bows, now you will type in for example "drop 00013985 5" The number 5 is an example of quantity, as that's how many my Lydia had, however your follower may only have 2 etc.

This is only a temporary fix, I haven't come across a permanent one.

Take the bow from them?

Bows are the default weapons of companions no matter if they no weapon at all.

Anyway OP, you just need to give your companion a better bow for one thing. Maybe even give it a better melee weapon. It will switch to the melee weapon when it deems it necessary, but you have to realize companions are stupid as s***.

I think the SkyrimNPCEditor mod lets you force them to use a certain weapon or fight a certain way, kind of like the Companion mod for Oblivion. Try it, I just take the bow away or use the editor so they use both.

"Now you'll pay!"

It's great how they will equip the best weapon and apparel you give them and they seem to use potions too.

Poor Lydia has received a lot of collateral damage from me, she tends to rush into battle and get in the way, probably a good thing :whistling:

That's strange, she must have different skills, Lydia always switches to the draining axe i gave her in close range and rushes into melee combat usually clearing the floor of lesser enemies before i do anything. . .

Does she have any other wepons she can use? Try giving her a selection of goodies.

Thanks for the replies!

I've given her good arrows but no powerful bows. The thing is that in close quarters she will change and use melee, but in cases where we can see the enemy coming she stays with the bow unless someone gets close.

Not that I mind, being a warrior myself, but it's just for future reference. Thanks for the codes, I'll give it a try.

Get the NPC editor and edit out the BOW ability. Pull up the NPC and set the Bow Archery skill to zero. Then they will never use a bow.

I don't have the link, but a search brings it up fast. Its easy to use and even easier to abuse, if thats your game style.

Since I have not seen this mentioned so far, here it is.

Your follower starts with melee and switches to bows because their health is low. When their health is low they yield, enemies stop attacking them and will then run after you/other NPCs. Your NPC will after a short while stand back up and begin using bows. I believe this was intended by the game to help keep low health followers out of AOEs to prevent deaths.

If you heal your companion back up to around 50% health, they will pull their melee weapon back out and charge into battle. You can keep them fighting for longer by buffing them with Courage and giving them health potions.
