Keegan1622
Hello everybody, this is my fist post here, I've search for an answer to this dumb question but couldn't find it. I am playing with several mods, some are small (few kb) some are big. I have a bit of lag when I am in cities (never in dungeons or outside) and I'd like to get rid of that. What mods can slow down my computer like that ?Actually, I'd like to know if it's better to run lots of small mods or few big ones. Which solution provoke the more lag ? Thank you !
pathtopower
Anything that adds a insane amount of script. Active script that work in a cloak like manner is a constant repetitive script in the background is a engine killer. A handful is alright, a whole gang of em is a ctd disaster waiting to happen. Anything that can change the AI of ALL of the npc's is a bad thing, adding even more npc's is a very bad idea since that means the ai changing script will be working in overtime. Adding open cities can also cause this because it forces a already complex environment to suddenly have to deal with a huge amount of data like npc's ai's, buildings and all them nice mod changing attributes that increases the textures to the point it may clog the engine. The engine suuuucks ass when it comes to dealing with a insane amount of mods that changes the papyrus engine. A lot of em required Skse in the past because it help regulate most of em. But without skse to help make things run smoother, you playing with fire. Edited January 18, 2017 by pathtopower

I guess "Immersive Citizens : AI Overhaul" is the one that makes me lag sometimes in city.Though I downloaded LOOT and since it changed my load order I have far less lag. But now I know I shouldn't add other script mods or new NPC.I'm relieved because that means new contents like set of armors or Ordinator should not slow me. cdcooley
How a mod tries to change NPCs matters. Immersive Citizens doesn't really cause lag because it is permanently and individually changing the NPC AI via quests not though some temporary spell effect. As you've found load order can matter and mods that add NPCs and high resolution textures are the other big problems. It could be armor and clothing mods. There are a lot of different NPCs in a city and if they all wear a different outfit with high resolution textures that will mean loading all of them into memory at the same time. That's one of the reasons the bigger cities are walled off into their own world spaces.
jones177
Hi Scripts don't cause lag if you can keep your frame rate up. In the old game I used a silly amount of script mods. If I dropped below 42 fps scripts backed up. I tested with the Convenient Horses utility. It is the reason I didn't play the old game at 4k screen resolution. I could play at 1440 screen resolution with ENB & keep the frame rate above 42 fps even with a GTX 980. When testing mods for lag, the biggest culprits are any mods that add meshes like Skyrim Flora Overhaul or SMIM. They are fine if you are just doing a play through but can be a killer if you add lots of NPCs & scripts. There are lots of mods that add buildings on this site. Most are not very well optimized. I always do a frame rate test before & after I install these types of mods. If the mod puts the frame rate were it will cause script lag it will be removed. A really fast GPU can keep your frame rate up when you have lots of scripts but your CPU choice will dictate the amount of script/meshes you can run. Keegan1622
Thanks guys for your answers.I'm using LOOT so I guess I have no problem with my load order (running 47 mods atm). I have a tiny bit of lag in cities, but a LOT of lag in my house (lakeview manor). Everytime I fast travel there, I have a 5-10 seconds freeze where I can't do anything, and then everything works again with no lag. What could provoke that ?I have also lag when I enter the manor.
