You did indeed miss something. Technicly, Uriel 7 was the last Dragonblood Emperor (Martin was never crowned). After the Oblivion Crisis, the Mede's took control of the Empire, holding everything together and keeping the Septim Empire from falling appart.

The Dragonborn is another lineage of Dragonbloods, but has absolutely no relation to the Septims.

Ah yes.

Imagine your Dragonborn is a argonian, woud be wired, woudnt it?

Father Septim, Mother Argonian or the other way around, then a few Argonian-Argonian parentships down the line. EDIT: Albeit I never seen any hybrid person in the game ever (except Bretons being half elves). Even between the various kinds of humans - strange. On the other hand, relationships don't seem to be restricted in anyway - An oversight?

Admitedly, its ambigious in the game. However, in meta-interviews, Bethesda has stated that at one point there were many different lines of Dragonborn. One of them became the Septim Emperors. Your character in Skyrim is decended from another lineage, and is probably the last Dragonborn on Tamriel.

Just made me wonder, that no single NPC in the game drops a line about it. Maybe that would high treason to the imperials and to the stormcloaks wouldn't want to put Ulfir in second line. Might be nice if one or the other might say something sub rosa, disregarding if they are wrong or not.

It's a fair question. I don't think any Nords or mortals really know exactly what Dovakiin means. Personally, I often think it's a proper name when used correctly and a general description when used incorrectly. Ask a dragon.

"Why do you call me Dovakiin, as if it's my dragon name?"

I kind of think Dovakiin is more akin to being a god tho than an emperor.

Dragonblood seems to me as one of those lost-in-translation titles. I remember reading that being Dragonborn, or having the soul of a dragon, transcends mere blood relation. It's a gift from the gods, and can not be reduced to what flows in your veins, though that does certainly seem to be a part of it. Just a part though.

Imperial dynasty, however, doesn't take into account whatever higher connection those who are Dragonborn have with one another (at least not anymore); and I doubt that it could outside of a period in which the Dragonborn was necessary.
