New modder looking for any helpful advice one might offer.

Recommended Posts

It's what the topic says, really. I've spent a lot of time waiting and commenting on a specific mod I'd like to see made. I've spent no time learning and doing, so it is time to quit pestering others and lace my own boots up. I'm basically just looking for any advice on any range of topics, although what I'm going to do is going to involve minor scripting or at least script edits.

Basically as the few settlement raid mods that exist no longer seem to work for me, I want to create my own. It isn't terribly complex in the scope of things, I don't think. All I'm looking to do is increase the amount of enemies in raids, up their frequency or rather the odds of them happening, things like that. Not the hardest thing anyone has done here I know, but it'll be hard for me. So yeah, I'm off to google tutorials and stuff, but I'd love any advice on anything or just where to start from you folk who know what you're doing.

Thanks in advance!

Tutorials on a wide variety of topics are included here: https://forums.nexusmods.com/index.php?/topic/3760875-fallout-4-modding-tutorials/

One tip, from what I've seen on the troubleshooting side of things I suspect that part of the reason that a lot of the enemy spawning related mods have so many problems is that they were all made by people new to scripting who don't yet know basic best practices in scripting. Once you've gotten a really good handle on understanding Papyrus you might ask a veteran scripter to help you think of things to do you might have missed. They're not going to want to hand hold you through every step of learning but when you have specific questions they'll generally help out. But you've definitely got to show the initiative of having done the bulk of the learning effort on your own.

Thanks, both of you! I'll definitely be taking the bulk of the learning upon myself, although I may ask for explanations on certain things if I'm brain farting. I want to learn the right to do this, and really make something that works. It'd be nice to give back to this community rather than just taking from it all the time for once, so if I can do it right I'd probably upload it.

I'm on the same boat as you, but with a couple of days of headstart.

As a noob trying to learn modding, I'd say one thing that is helping me is trying to reverse-engineer stuff. If you want to do something, search for original stuff that is similar to it and try to start from there - be it scripts or Creation Kit stuff. You'll start noticing patterns and common rules, even if you are not familiarized with them yet. That is, of course, in addition to watching/reading tutorials, searching google and looking/asking for info on the forums.

Good luck!
