Krawll
I can't realy answer your question but i can tell you about a horse in the game that you can never lose and that is nearly invincible . WARNING SPOILERS BELOW I tried using the [spoilers] [\spoilers] thingy and it doesn't seem to work so to hell with that . So anyways , the horse i'm talking about is named Shadowmere and is awarded to you by the Dark Brotherhood. You do a few quests for them and Astrid will eventualy tell you to use her horse for one of the quests , the horse will be waiting outside the sanctuary when you come out and after that quest, she will tell you to hang on to it for a while cuz he needs the exercise and he hasn't been riden nearly as much as he should lately and stuff . Then because of certain events that take place which i won't mention in order to keep it a surprise, Shadowmere becomes your horse . Before i got Shadowmere, i couldn't keep a horse for more than a few minutes without having him killed by falling the edge of a cliff or losing him cuz they just kept wandering off in places i just couldn't find them. Shadowmere will always be there when you fast travel whether you decide to mount him or not before Fast traveling , he also has an incredibly fast health regeneration which makes him nearly impossible to kill. And on top of that , he's the coolest looking horse in the game . Oh and he also seems to have more stamina than any other horse in the game so you can sprint for a very long time with him before he slows down on his own. I also never realy attempted to swim with other horses but i did with Shadowmere and he's a great swimmer, he'll take you across any water holes no problem. And if you can't find him when coming out of a town, just use the fast travel and he will be there next to you when you spawn. Now i won't tell you in details how to join the Dark Brotherhood but i'll try to point you in the right direction , i wouldn't want to spoil the surprise entirely. Go to Windhelm and start talking to people, they'll eventualy tell you about a boy who's trying to summon the Dark Brotherhood.Go talk to that boy and do whatever he asks you to do. When that is done, a courier will eventualy come to you , i hope you're not too easily creeped out lol. Once you've received that letter , all you need to do is find a nice and warm bed . :D Enjoy your new friendships :P
chanchan05
Frost is free, you get it from Riften and you don't need to join anything if you don't want to. A particularly "good guy" play through would not likely want to join the DB just for Shadowmere. Just go to the Bee and Barb, then talk to Lucius. He'll set you up with the quest for Frost. In the end either just Intimidate him, Persuade him or kill him and you get Frost free. He does not have Shadowmere's awesome life regen, but he does have the stamina. I realy had no idea about Forst. Shadowmere was the one and only named horse i ever found. And before that, i had purchased one horse from a stable which cost me 1000 gold only to see it die a few minutes later after droping about 15 feet while trying to walk down a mountain. The only other horses i ever had were stolen and i could never keep a stolen horse for very long. They simply just wander off as soon as you dismount it. Which had led me to simply forget about horses untill i found Shadowmere. But i have to say that Horses are quite annoying in this game. They are rather hard to steer since they can't turn without moving forward at the same time, the fact that they can't go backwards is also annoying and i don't realy know about Frost or other horses but as for Shadowmere, he would always attack my ennemies and i found that to be more annoying than anything else. When i'm fighting i don't want my horse to be in the way of my blade. Even though his health regeneration kinda makes up for any accidental blows you might give him and the fact that he cannot turn on you no matter how many hits you give him . I still found it very annoying. I just wish he would stay away from fights and let me handle the fighting alone.
JanusForbeare
Open the console (~), click on the horse you want to own, and type "setownership" (no quotes). Voila! You now own a horse. Or anything else you choose to use the command on.

I could be wrong, but I believe you'll have to wait for CK to come out to actually be able to change this. I've tried changing the factions of horses and other random stuff, but they always end up wandering back to their homes.

He does have larger life than most other horses since he can tank a dragon for me, but as I said, he's easier to kill than Shadowmere.
MooImmaFish
I'm going to guess that most people don't want to use this method, however if you just want a horse that wont keep trying to return to a stable/camp and don't mind spawning one, you can spawn Karinda using the console. She(?) is the color of the Whiterun Stables horse and has no saddle. She doesn't exist anywhere in the game as far as I can tell, I'm guessing she was originally going to be part of a quest or something (since Whiterun Stables is the only stable with less than 2 horses) but never made it in. Base ID is 5F865. If you type "player.placeatme 5F865 1" into the console, without quotes, it will place her at you. thesapien
Funny, you guys who kill your horses. I've never ridden a horse off a small cliff or had a big fall. You sound like someone who just wrecked their car and is complaining that cars aren't invincible. Also, my owned horses always appear when I fast travel, as long as it's to a place where horses are permitted. Other than those points, I don't much like having a horse in this game without using the mod that makes them able to outrun other wildlife. Otherwise, they don't really serve a purpose and can be annoying and won't let you fire an arrow and mounting and dismounting times outweigh any time saved by riding. I've tried changing the factions of horses and other random stuff, but they always end up wandering back to their homes. My bad, I missed that in the original post. To the OP, AI packages (and therefore home location) cannot be manipulated via the console. If you're planning on staying nearby (and in the same cell as) your horse, you can toggle its AI off by using the console command TAI. This will freeze your horse in place and prevent it from moving; however, note that the horse will still return to its home location if you leave the immediate area. You will also need to return AI in order to mount the animal.
