hsung
I am new to Skyrim and can't tell if an NPC is friendly or aggressive in the outlands. I know the red dot comes on the compass if they are aggressive, but that's getting too close for a sneak attack. Is there a way to identify aggressive NPC's from a distance without them spotting you first?

In a lot of cases they draw weapons and tell you not to come closer.Bandits just attack Guards carry banner shields and certain factions wear types of armour. Once you get the zoom on your bow it becomes easier to tell Edited January 18, 2012 by worldofscotty
Feanoro
I recommend you kill it first then start asking questions.
hsung
Guards carry banner shields and certain factions wear types of armour. Once you get the zoom on your bow it becomes easier to tell Yes, I figured this as well, but will be a while before I get this perk. Initially I thought all guards carry a torch at night, but this is not the case. Not just guards carry shields, right? I recommend you kill it first then start asking questions. I shot the Khajiit named something Liar near Whiterun at night, but could not kill him. I guess if an NPC is part of a quest, they are invincible before the end. However, I don't want to make enemies of friendly NPC's like the hunter/merchants who roam the roads ...

Sanbru
If it has a robe kill it. Mostly evil mages or necromancers. Bandits, and Forsworn..kill.
hsung
You shot M'aiq? That's gotta be bad juju.Tis was when I thought any NPC loitering on the road at night is a bandit :whistling: maybe sending your companion near the npcs would do the trickI could do this, but that would give away a sneak attack or worse get Lydia killed :psyduck:
hsung
If it has a robe kill it. Mostly evil mages or necromancers. Bandits, and Forsworn..kill. It's hard to distinguish between a robe and leather clothing from afar. I was of two minds before deciding not to shoot the 3 drunkards just outside of Winterhold. I decided not too and got a free drink  The other 3 soldiers I met along the way weren't as friendly ... didn't get to converse with them because they drew their weapons and asked us to move along. chanchan05
If you have detect life skill, it can detect if its an enemy or not. Friendlies are colored bluish, while enemies are sort of pink. It can detect life from Eagle Eye range (basically, they're still invisible to your player at that point).
