Best way to level up?

Okay, so obviously, I come to Oblivion for some good, clean RPG fun, right? Now, I see all these characters that are at least level 15+ plus, and still haven't completed things like the Main Quest or the Fighters Guild quests. Does anybody know of a fast, yet rewarding way to level up quickly? (Without console commands, of course)

Thx!

The best and fastest way to level up depends on what type of character you're playing. Just running around killing everything might work for a BattleMage or a Warrior/Adventurer, but would just be a good (and pointless) workout for a Rogue or an Assassin.

Look at your major skills, doing those things will make you level up fast, but that may not always be good. Sometimes it is good to work on your minor skills for a while before leveling up, again it depends on what type of character you're playing.

But I understand if you're low level and are sick of fighting wild animals and scamps, the larger beasts and deadra are so much more fun.

When you leveled up you are given bonus to upgrade some of your stats, and the bigger each stats bonus is influences by what skills you "gain more" between each leveling. IE, more level up in blades skill = more srength bonus available at level up. Each skill align with a specific stats. I think you should concerntrate more on that aspect base on what type of character you are. So you should look ahead, for example, if you think you need more personality, perform more bargaining and persuasion. That is the more effective method.

But if you just want to level as much as possible, just gain as much skill as possible, you gain level by gaining enough skill a certain number of times, I'm not sure if it's a fixed number but probably somewhere around 10. You can find masters/teachers all across Cyrodiil who teach the skills, you are allow to have the masters raise your skill 5 times between each leveling.

The problem with this game and morrowind is it doesn't matter after a while since you will inevitably become too strong for anything. Because of that I try to not raise my strength at level up to make the game more challenging. Once are you too strong for anything the game just becomes very boring.

erm.. tmx are you playing on Easy setting or do you use a levelled creature mod? coz the creatures in oblivion get a lot harder as you level up, in vanilla oblivion leastways. i could slaughter everything in 1 hit at level 1 with a bow while sneaking, at level 50 it takes 2 - 3 hits while unseen to kill anything...

To level fast with weapon skills by the way, don't complete the everscamp quest, instead goto Rosentia Gallentia's, or whatever she's called, home in leyawiin and slaughter the everscamps, they have 1 health and ressurrect every 10 secs or so, making it easy to raise attack skills. Magic skills just require a spell from that school and access to arcane uni, make a spell to cast on yourself at 1 magicka cost, that way it'll always hit and you get the same xp on that skill and you can repeatidly cast it without running out of magicka for long periods. The stealth skills just require you to find somewhere to use them and just keep using them, but i find the Grey Mare in Chorrol good for sneak training and for mercantile just collect arrows, potions and other light things and sell them one at a time.

Skills go up in a variety of different ways.

Firstly they increase by use. Early on these increases are very fast but they slow down. For instance in mercantile you might increase the first level by selling 20 items; to get from level 99 to 100 you may have to sell 600 items. (Various factors will affect the exact number). Selling 100 arrows as a block is one sale but selling them one by one - if you have the patience - counts as 100 sales. Some magic related skills - Mysticism, Alteration, Conjuration and Alchemy will continue to increase relatively quickly in the later stages of the game but most slow down a lot.

There are many skill books in the game. Reading them will increase a skill level by one point. Each skill has five such books except speechcraft which has only four.

Doing certain quests will earn you skill levels e.g. the first FG quest in Anvil, the Grey Prince quest, becoming leader of the Dark Brotherhood, saving Da-Mar, saving Jeelius and keeping Baurus alive when fighting the Mythic Dawn etc.

In two places you get skill increases simply by watching people practising fighting.

Finally each time you level up you get 5 chances to train (and you start with 5 at the very beginning of the game. The ability to train however is dependent on the level of the attribute that governs the skill. (None of the other methods of increasing skills is so dependent.) So if personality is 30, you cannot use a trainer to raise skill level over 30 etc.

For this reason when levelling up you should also try to maximise attribute points available. If you know what you are doing you can get the 5 point increase in two or three attributes each time you level up (though Luck can only be increased one point at a time and you need to start doing so from the start if you want to maximise all attributes). It is easily possible to maximise attributes within the standard game.

Many skills can be increased by methods permitted in game that may or may not be considered 'cheating' depending on your point of view. Swimming at a wall (say in one of the IC ponds) will increase your athetics pretty quickly, repeatedly casting a low level spell by pinning the relevant keyboard key down can be used for magic, allowing opponents to hit you and staying alive using potions will increase armour type (and block if you use it).

However you have to be careful to ensure your attack and defence skills are levelled in line with the difficulty of the monsters that turn up at each new level or you may find yourself overwhelmed. Morrowind monsters ceased getting harder by level 23 so by the time you were 30 the whole thing was too easy (the expansions were a little harder). Oblivion levelling never ends. At high levels you may be able to kill everything but the fights tend to be long and repetitive making the experience pretty tedious.

You can play with the difficulty slider at any time. If you set it to 'difficult' as I understand it the damage you do drops to a sixth of 'standard' and monster damage on you is increased 6 times. I may have those figures wrong but the concept is like that. If you play on 'Easy' I expect it works the other way around.

Hope this makes sense and helps.

normal setting, and i don't use hard armor (i use the unarmor mod) and only light weapons. no it doesnt take 3 hits for me, but 10-15 hits to take out an orge, but i have enough resource to take on a group, and i never ever experiences any difficult anywhere anytime while playing oblivion, even when my level was low. since i don't apply many strengths on level up if i have troubles i use potions i made which usually have 3 different damage effects and paralyze. the game was not designed as an outright first person shooter.
