CTD after having a follower

-LONG STORY-

So recently I deleted a far along save file (about 200 hrs worth of playtime) and decided to start fresh with all mods starting from the new fresh save... things have been working great, no crashes, everything loads quickly again, I was having fun and happily avoiding mod stress... but then after I got my first follower (Seductress Elizabeth mod for those who use/love it like I do) and all of a sudden, the save file starts to CTD once I start loading it after that day of playing... At first i thought it was my follower mod, but that wasnt the case, another follower mod I had has the same issue, and then I even tested it with a ingame follower and it crashed also!

-SHORT STORY-

Recruiting followers causes my save to crash after quitting the game! any advice on fixing it?

-NOTE-

-This didnt happen when i had my 200hr save

-My two follower mods never gave me this issue before and neither did the ingame followers

-MY THOUGHTS-

It might be a problem with the Skyrim game itself but im not sure how I can confirm this...

PLEASE HALP! I WANT TO DO MY SKYRIM RUN WITH A FOLLOWER!

I wouldn't put it past the game itself, being that it's buggy as all heck; but that is not likely the case. It's probably a load order issue or perhaps your follower framework has been corrupted. You can try a clean install, you can try to reinstall your follower mod and the framework (AFT, UFO...). Here is how you clean install: https://forums.nexusmods.com/index.php?/topic/906390-cleaning-skyrim-for-fresh-install/

If you use LOOT to sort your mods, you can post your load order here from the LOOT settings menu. There is an option to copy your load order.

Thats the loadorder for ya, know sure if that provides much help... Im gonna try the method you mentioned of reinstalling framework but is that gonna require another freshsave? (Not that i got far with this new one since I only just got to Skyhaven >.>)

and errr... ignore the certain questionable mods in that list >.>

Ok, before you go reinstalling everything, did you change anything about your load order before you started your new game? If so, what?

From my personal experience, I've found UFO to be the least desirable follower overhaul to use, AFT and EFF are much better, so maybe consider that.

I agree with saurusmaximus: I didn't get happy with UFO either. Problem is: Changing follower management mods during a playthrough is risky. You might screw up your save game. I wouldn't recommend switching to EFF or AFt / iAFT, if you care about your save game.

Another thing regarding followers: From my experience, script heavy followers with lots of custom options and quests should be loaded AFTER your follower management mod (UFO, AFT, EFF), standard followers on the other hand should be loaded BEFORE follower management mods. Don't rely on LOOT, when it comes to followers. So putting UFO further down in your load order might be worth a try - if it really is a follower related problem.

Looking at your load order, I see a lot of script heavy mods (among other things like "BBLS" and "blowing in the wind" all that stuff from LL) and also some mods adding a lot of animations. You might have reached the point, where crashes on load due to simple "memory overload" become an issue. Check out "Continue game no crash": http://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/78557/?

If it's a memory issue, this will help.

uhhhh... well crap the deed has already been done... now my current concern is re-installing everything... its my first time actually doing a clean install so im at a lost at what to do...

-Do I hunt every mod down again?

-And if not UFO, AFT or EFF? i heard those have an equal amount of issues...

-And to answer the questions above, when I made my new save I got rid of a old follower I never used and updated "BBLS" to the latest version, I think I also removed enhanced lighting as that was there also but I felt like I needed one less performance issue to worry about.

-Didnt realize blowing in the wind was actually heavy 0.0;;;

Just follow that link above that I posted about clean installing. It'll tell you how.

If you haven't deleted your mods, they should still be in your mod organizer.

I feel UFO had more issues that I've experienced and seen others experience. I personally use AFT and have no issues.

To add to what snelss0 said:

-Realistic lighting really doesn't hit your performance that much, if you like it, you can keep it.

-Here is the quick and dirty differences between AFT and EFF: AFT limits you to 5 active followers (there is a plug-in that can bump that to 7 if you like) at a time. It actively manages outfits, so you can have your followers change from armor to clothing when you enter your house, and have them only equip helmets when they are in combat. AFT generally also handles custom-voiced followers better, and it adds things like posing and dancing, if you are in to that.

EFF has fewer frills than AFT, but it allows you to have as many followers as you want/your system can handle. It uses a menu-driven interface that is easier to use (my opinion) vs. AFT (which still uses dialogue menus), and while you have to manually manage outfits, it generally does a better job of allowing you to change a followers default outfit (some custom followers don't like giving that up). As I mentioned, it doesn't handle multiple custom-voiced followers well on it's own, but it comes with a "Mind Control" spell that allows you to bring just about anyone into it's framework without too much trouble (AFT has a similar feature, but it doesn't work as well).

If you can't decide which to use, check the mod page of whatever followers you are using; some just work better with one than the other.

Otherwise, just pick one and try it out, though if you are going to test them, I suggest just making a "testing save", as trying to switch follower overhauls mid-save is an exercise in frustration.

If you really get stuck on your reinstall, feel free to post back.

To add to the confusion, I'd like to throw in a third alternative: Immersive Amazing Follower Tweaks (iAFT): http://www.nexusmods.com/skyrim/mods/71689/?

It has the same basic functions as AFT, but a nice MCM to configure everything and some more options, too. You can also choose, if you want the "classic" AFT dialogue options or a more "immersive" (yet more complicated) dialogue tree. Besides that, it isn't limited to a certain number of followers.

Only thing you have to do is add these lines to your Skyrim.ini:

iNumberActorsAllowedToFollowPlayer=[desired number]
iNumberActorsInCombatPlayer=[desired number plus some headroom]

I'm using iAFT for about 9 months now. No major issues, no CTDs. Only bug I found is a visual glitch: If you put equipment in a follower's "backpack", then do the same with a second follower, the scond follower may show the content of the first follower's backpack. Dismissing an re-recruiting both followers fixed that for me.

Okay so currently leaning towards AFT after looking it over, now on to the tedious/fun part... so looking at my NMM (its what I use ovbiously) I was expecting to have to hunt down every mod again but ive noticed they are all still there and they all have the green check next to them, does that mean they were still installed? or do I just do the whole "Reinstall" option when I right click it? i just want to verify before I break something again -.-
