The Great Library of Tamriel

So I'm considering working on a mod called The Great Library of Tamriel that would basically put all the books from all TES games into a single place. I know you can't upload copyrighted assets into a previous game... but what if the books were re-created in Skyrim from previous games (a new edition, a re-print of a lost text, etc.) There can be lore-friendly ways to re-introduce the books from Tribunal, Daggerfall, Battlespire, Morrowind, etc.)

Figure I'd get the opinions of the community before I start any real work on the concept...

Hmmm.....

I don't know much about copyrights or laws(Who needs those? ), But I think that would be a good idea. I know someone has already imported some skill books from Oblivion, but I don't remember whether he copied the text, titles, or just added some nameless books. As it is, mods that... How to put it? :X From what I understand, mods that COPY material from one game and put them in another are illegal. This is why Oblivion in Skyrim and FO:NV/Skyrim mods haven't as of yet been realized fully, because nobody wants to make a whole new environment without the CK, and can't very well go uploading parts of FO:NV for use with the mod.

However, since you obviously know that(Refreshing to see someone who actually knows about laws and stuff), here's my opinion. :P

I think that would be a great idea, and I wouldn't mind helping. I know most TES wikis have transcripts of all the books. I think with enough tweaking(I'm not sure how much has to be different for it not to violate copyrights), this would be perfectly feasible. PM me if you need some help :D

I know it was done for Morrowind, there was a mod that added all the books from Daggerfall. I vaguely remember it being done for Oblivion (I could never get into Oblivion, it's been ages since I looked at any mods for it). There was also an Oblivion mod that added all the alchemy ingredients from Morrowind to the leveled lists, which is quite a similar idea - content from a previous game, but not actual models from those games. None of these mods, to my knowledge, was removed due to copywrite objections. The texts are also on various websites (UESP, The Imperial Library, and whatnot) that, while not officially endorsed by Bethesda, I find it extremely unlikely that they are unaware of them. If I had to guess, I'd say that as long as the models and testures from the previous games arn't used it will be fine. That might mean not using any of the original illustrations (there are a few from Morrowind that I know of). Some will probably be easy enough to do new versions of (ABC's for Barbarians for instance), some not so easy (Dwemer plans).

I'll probably give you a PM at some stage when I've got my thoughts together. I was thinking of doing something similar (but not so large) and it would be good to be able to contribute to a good mod after all these years of using them.

I don't know much about copyrights or laws(Who needs those? )

... every author, musician, painter who creates something needs those laws and it is only selfish people who dont want to honor those artists need for food and a warm home who dont pay for those creative additions to our lives. Sadly the industry is perverting the idea of copyright and the gaming industry is a good example with all the anti-piracy stuff of having to have an online connection to play a game you legally bought. Fight the industry and not the copyright.

A "grand library" is a good idea and should be doable with Skyrims bookshelves, but every library is sorted in a catalogue. The books all belong to one or more topics and that is quite a headache to sort them. I am also annoyed in my sense for symmetry by the huge size differences of Skyrims books on those shelves ... and the fact that you cant know the size of the books while they are still in your inventory. Thus there are two questions:

1. Is there a way to categorize the books? (Dwemer, skill increases, history, nature, diaries, quest XYZ, ...) You kinda need to find the books if you really want to use them and if you dont want to use them the whole idea seems a bit too much work for nothing.

2. Has anyone thought about adjusting the sizes to a near-standard-size? (85-115% size variation instad of the current sizes) I always thought spellbooks should be kinda huge instead of those tiny leaflets.

I went ahead and created a WIP/REQ post in Skyrim Mod Requests to organize the project. Currently I'm going through the various wiki's and getting a list of all TES books - then I'll go about organizing the Dwemer Decimal System, coming up with how it's laid out. There are several books that will fall in multiple sections so I'll figure that out.

The project is at: http://www.thenexusforums.com/index.php?/topic/538559-req-wip-the-great-library-of-tamriel/

It was a joke. That's what the tongueface was for. My apologies for any offendment.

If my thinking is straight, and I'm not getting mixed up - I'm under the impression that Bethesda often puts the same books in multiple games. They leave out some, for some odd reason, but for one thing - the books are Bethesda's copyright and nobody's using them for profit, and if I were them, I'd not care if they were modded in. If they were modded into another game, I'd raise an eybrow, but the books are part of ES lore and it's hard to read these books otherwise.

I think it's a "just don't try to make a buck off it" kinda thing.
