Fkemman11
â I wanted to start this topic with a little story of me trying to help a fellow gamer. Now he reported that he could not get any mods to work in FO4. I tried to walk him through the process of enabling mods for FO4 on PC. This went back and forth a few times- you know - me asking if he had done x and him saying yeah. But he just couldn't make it work on his pc. Finally, he throws up his hands and says "to hell with it. I got better things to do". I'm scratchin my head and thinking "Why is this s*** so hard?" Now. In my experience with modding, I have had relatively little trouble getting mods to work in my FO4.(far less than with Skyrim) Is this because FO4 was made differently or something? Or are mod authors getting better in general at what they do? What are some of the common reasons for a mod not to work in FO4? As a side note I have downloaded a mod today from Beth. I hav'nt tried it yet. But could this cause problems with mods from this site? And why does Nexus not handle console mods anyway? Is it something to do with a licensing agreement? I absolutely love modding FO4 and would like to thank all mod authors for sharing their skill and talent with the community!! :geek:
charwo
I dunno. I haven't tried modding properly, but Gopher's got a video on how to to it and it doesn't seem that hard. Plus for me there's a Fallout 4 mod manager program.

But, for some reason mods just seem to work better in FO4. I wonder if this is true for the console as well. Yesterday I saw somebody figure out which mod was giving them trouble out of about 200 or so. His reaction was "Awww. I didn't want it to be that one!".
charwo
What I mean is I gave up on Fallout 4 before I found mod mods I wanted. I downloaded some texture redos to give the trees some leaves and make the grass green, but nothing more than texture replace.Once Wasteland Overhaul is released, I'll try again. But I do know Gopher makes very good how to mod Fallout videos. And that vast load order is why I what for weapon packs and such. Don't get me wrong, with New Vegas I'm running just under the limit of mods, but only one is a weapons pack and only one is an armor pack.
TheSpaceShuttleChallenger
Believe it or not, there are a lot of people who play PC games but have no experience with s#*! like editing .ini files or sorting load orders. Not everyone is completely comfortable rifling through their game files. It's daunting but not difficult to follow a Gopher video, assuming everything goes correctly, but sometimes everything doesn't go correctly. Sometimes your game is installed a bit differently, sometimes there's a quirk in your files or system, sometimes you made one tiny little mistake and now you have a massive headache trying to figure out what's stopping your game from working. And tbh, if your only reaction to a guy following all the usual instructions and trying the usual fixes without success is "why is it so hard" kind of tells me you don't have a hell of a lot of experience modding yourself. It's hard because Bethesda makes buggy games with sloppy coding on a finicky engine, which makes modding an unreliable process. You've been fairly lucky to not have any troubles so far. It's true that modders are generally getting better (many of us are carrying in experience from Skyrim,) and there are more resources available (both in the form of guidance and tools) to help us make better mods more easily. But Fallout4 is pretty damn histrionic. It plays relatively smoothly but inside it's held together with chewing gum and bits of strings, with things knotted up and stuck together in the laziest possible fashion. Even if you know what you're doing, sometimes you'll touch something that seems like it should be stable and for some reason it just explodes into a cascade of broken stuff breaking other stuff which has irreversibly scarred the game file. I'm glad that mods aren't breaking the game as often as they did with Skyrim but when Fallout4 breaks, it really, really breaks.

I'm glad that mods aren't breaking the game as often as they did with Skyrim but when Fallout4 breaks, it really, really breaks. Well to be fair. I suppose I don't have nearly as much experience modding as you do. But I do try to learn as much as I can when possible. In this particular instance this person- for whatever reason- could not get even the basic install of his game and custom ini. to work for installing a single mod. That part I do not consider hard and could not understand what could have been the problem. I tried to help him as best I could. But he gave up before we could figure out his problem. Yes I suppose I could consider myself lucky that I've had as few problems with modding FO4 as I have. But this is not to say that I have not spent many hours looking things up, asking, and trying different things to ensure a semi-smooth running FO4. :nuke:
