How can I look inside the .esp file for a follower mod?

Yeah I'm using a custom follower but I want to give it an outfit. Unfortunately it's complicated in-game as the character changes to the default option every time I load a new area. I just want to change the ID of the armor in the file to something else.

I tried Creation Kit but it's entirely too confusing. No idea where to begin so if anyone can help that would be great.

Make a copy of the esp file in case something happens as well as the Face Gen Data (Steam\steamapps\common\Skyrim\Data\meshes\actors\character\FaceGenData\FaceGeom\Mod Name) and Face Tint Data (Steam\steamapps\common\Skyrim\Data\textures\actors\character\FaceGenData\FaceTint\Mod Name) in case you end up with the dreaded Black Face Bug.

Using the CK with the follower mod selected and set to active (Data tab) go to the Actor/actors section.

Type in the Followers name, then double click on the NPC.

Go to the inventory tab change the armor ( or delete it entirely).

Close NPC window then save file.

If you are feeling lucky, fire up the game. If not, copy the face gen and face tint data back to their spots.

Note: You WILL get several error messages when you start up the CK. Just hit Yes to All and ignore them.

In the NPC window if I set the default outfit to none would this allow me to put whatever I want on the character or will they just stay naked/revert to a default outfit (this character has 3 outfit choices).

Ok I changed the default outfit to none which allowed me to use the "equipitem" id my follower didn't change back to the default outfit and reloading a cell.
