Open-Ended RPGs

Are there any other open-ended RPGs you like besides TES games? What are they? Which is the best one? Games that force you to play a specific race/character do not count for my needs, even if you play them in an open-type world with open choices. This would eliminate games like Thief and Assassin's Creed. Thanks you for your feedback.

Baldur's Gate 2 is open-ended and a lot of fun, if you don't mind the isometric view and dated graphics. :)

Planescape Torment as well to a lesser extend, but it forces you to play as The Nameless One so I guess you won't like that. But it's still my favourite game ever next to Morrowind.

Also, Icewind Dale. It now comes in a battle chest for 20 bucks. (Icewind Dale 1 & 2, bonus disc, exspansion, strategy guides, and soundtrack.)

Thaks for all the replies. I guess what I really want to know is if there's an open-ended fantasy RPG that gives you choice of race/class that anyone thinks is better than Morrowind and Oblivion?

Better then TES? That's a hard sell.

I'd personally have a hard time suggesting anything with the scope and visuals of Oblivion. It's like the ultimate free roam scenario. Very few games come close to matching TES series w/o heading into MMO territory. If you don't mind easing off your GPU, there's always the aforementioned CRPGs Planescape, Baldur's Gate 2, etc. They're fairly open-ended in the ways you're looking for. If you're preference for customization lies solely in the race/class of your characters, I'd also recommend other Bioware titles such as Neverwinter Nights, SW:Kotor, or even Mass Effect. Pretty fun and inexpensive now. Also of note, the D&D titles are the only games I've played where race might factor into your ability scores. The other games merely supplied it as an aesthetic choice.

Otherwise go the MMO route. I've only ever played Final Fantasy XI, WoW, and City of Heroes/Villains and I don't really have the time for them these days though I'm sure others can recommend a few good titles.

Based on what I've seen so far it's probably safe to say that TES 3 & 4 are the best of these types of games. I'm not really counting anything multi-player or in isometric view. Did I just rule out everything else? The visuals don't have to be as stunning as Oblivion just have that same full 3D feel. Even if there is it's probably not as popular as the last 2 TES games.

It's not fantasy setting, but Mass Effect has character creation, class, open-ended gameplay, and you get five or six other characters in your party, which you can take out on missions two at a time. I don't know if it's on PC or not though. But very good (not quite as great as OB).

Both Planescape and Icewind Dale are pretty linear. I wouldn't recommend these if you're looking for an open-ended RPG like the Elder Scrolls. But, if you're looking for good RPGs, then these are great games that everyone should try at least once.

If you want open-ended I suggest you look into Baldur's Gate and Gothic. If you haven't played Daggerfall then I would definitely recommend that one.

I have always wondered how Daggerfall compares to Morrowind based on gameplay aspects (not including graphics which no doubt improved). ?
