FO4 Will Not Start After 1.9.4.0 Update

Ever since the last game update Bethesda pushed out, FO4 has not worked. It worked just fine previously, but after the update it will not work at all. When I attempt to start the game from the desktop (either with F4SE or just with the Steam launcher) the screen will go black for a moment and then returns to the desktop. I have all the DLCs, if that is relevant.

FO4Edit loads everything alright, so I don't think there's a mod conflict involved, at least not an obvious one.

I have tried removing a number of mods, mostly relating to the UI as I know previous updates of the game didn't like those. I also tried removing Fallout4.exe and having Steam reacquire the file.

The only other thing I can think to try is the nuclear option: remove all mods and reinstall the game. I would really rather not do this as it will likely take me at least a week to get the game set up with all the mods again.

Has anyone else had trouble with the latest update or just had this problem in the past and managed to fix it?

Thank you for any advice you can send my way.

What you should try first is disabling EVERY mod and only load a vanilla game, if it still won't run then you have broken your INI's

Thanks. I just tried with all the plugins disabled. The game still didn't start. I'll try disabling every mod I have, but that will take a while.

I'm curious how the INIs would have broken. I was playing the game fine one day, then the update happened over night and the next day the game would not start. I didn't make any changes to the INIs.

if you made any edits to the INI's, or if a mod did, then the update MAY have broken the INI's

Also, please be aware that if you are using FO4SKSE, then that could be the problem as well since it takes the SKSE team a day or 3 to update it

I replaced the INIs with backups I made a couple months ago. Game started right up. I guess I never considered that would be the source of the problem because I knew that I had not made any edits to the INIs or installed any mods that made INI edits in a very long time. I didn't know that the updates Bethesda sends out do anything with/to the INIs.

Thanks for the help. This has been boggling my mind and it feels great to have it sorted.

so it works now?

If so I would double check your mods and MAKE SURE none of them make any edits

better safe than sorry

also, you MAY want to give this a read, specifically section 2 ( ALL of it )

Hi!

I might have the same problem but unfortunately I don't have any backup of the INIs...

If you still have both versions, could you please tell me what has been changed? It might help me to fix this.

Afraid I don't have the old old files anymore, but here's a link to a folder with my current ini files. You can check to see what's different between them and what you have. Keep in mind that some of the settings are based on mods I have installed.

Good luck!
