SSE CTD on Save After Hours of Gameplay

Another person with the issue chiming in. Only mine not only started to happen on saves, it also happened on resting.

I read through at least half of the pages in this thread. Pretty interesting stuff in that so much effort went into helping people out. Thank you very much for your assistance, especially you, Squireoivanhoe.

The problem seems to have stopped for me, at least for now. Here are the bullet points of my experience:

100 Active mods and 133 Active plugins.

I played about 80 hours into the game fine.

Installed a bow mod (Archery Combat Overhaul). Was playing great for several more hours.

At 86 hours, traveled to Falkreath for the first time. Slept at an Inn (Deadman's Drink - a fitting name). Instant crash to desktop at the end of sleep hour counter.

Reloaded to try again. Same exact problem.

Reloaded. Quicksaved. CTD.

Reloaded. Manually saved. CTD.

Reloaded. Fast traveled to Skyrim home. Slept there. To the best of my memory, it worked, initially.

Saved. CTD.

Reloaded a previous save from before I discovered Falkreath. Same problem. CTD on save or rest.

Then began the research, which eventually led me here

Read through most of the thread, found the 2 possible fixes. Saw that I already had SSE Engine Fixes installed (but an earlier version that did not have the updated files with the SaveGameMaxSize option.

Updated the above mentioned. Activated the MaxSize. Crossed fingers. The problem remained.

At this point, I was going to start trying to learn about the first option, but it was going to have to happen the next day as it was getting late. But I did remember that removing mods was mentioned as a band-aid type of fix. So I began looking at mods I use that have scripts I could do without. Found one I was ok with parting with. Removed it from the load order. Loaded the game. And the problem did not happen anymore.

I am currently at 109 hours without an issue so far, so 23 hours since the change.

I don't know if any of the above would be useful for anyone, but I wanted to give my input and as a thankyou to everyone who contributed. Skyrim's such a great game, and it's a sad thing when so much gametime gets lost T_T

Take care o/

I've been dealing with that crap for 2 days already and haven't found any solution. I'm thinking about just dropping skyrim at this point even tho I Don't Want To... There's still so much to do on this character, I can't abandon her.

Basically: CTD on any save, fast travel (since, well, autosave when travelling - same with waiting or sleeping). .NET framework gives me very similar logs, and "BGSSaveGameBuffer" line is almost always here. Examples of the logs: https://pastebin.com/6yNaZ2X6 / or it has "FreeRequestedModel" as the first line, like here: https://pastebin.com/ziCWkhqT (those started appearing recently).

Every time I crash on save there's a "TMP" file in my saves folder (I cleaned them all up already), instead of the usual ESS+SKSE.

I've tried basically everything in this thread - disabled mods, engine fixes already installed and memory patch enabled, empty REFR cleaned, and so on. But I know what might be the culprit, however, when I try to narrow it down, the problem persists or starts appearing after some time of the gameplay. I even turned off save compression, I thought it worked but crashes came back shortly.

I have a really massive modlist, built around Legacy of the Dragonborn - with almost every big quest mod around here for displays and stuff. I added some mid playthrough, I haven't done anything super drastic and game breaking... I guess.

Basically it started when I added a bunch of big quest mods so I can enable all the displays for Lotd V5. (I haven't had them at first because I did them in the past but I just wanted to keep my museum full lol.) But it might be any mod I installed on that day?...

My load order:

ESP/ESM only

Full load order (I have a lot of ESLs, which are mostly patches, small mods and outfits)

I spent like 7 hours yesterday trying to understand what the f is going on. I couldn't get red of the issue as I already said, however, when I disable some (or all) of those mods I can at least save. I was trying to narrow it down as I said, but the crashes were so random that I couldn't understand which one was causing it. I was enabling them one by one, trying to find the culprit, until all of them were on and I still was able to save. It happened several times during troubleshooting.

But after some time CTDs start appearing again. The last time it was an hour after peaceful gameplay.

I'm starting to think that it has something to do with the count of...? I don't even know, scripts? Big numbers? There's like 13 active scripts on my recent "cured" save (but I think it was loading something when I saved), so I don't even know, but others have like 4-7. But number of the script instances is pretty big, I'm not sure if that amount is normal.

My save file is around 18mb in size. I think I played around 100 hours? 150? Not sure.

I'm attaching my savefile in case there's someone who wants to look into it. I'm gonna add another when I crash again since I cleaned up my load order, removed some scripted mods and so on ( already cleaned the save).

I'm not sure if it has to do something with the issue but the last time I crashed when I was entering the Dragonborn gallery. And then the saves which were working before got cucked and I couldn't save (had to disable those quest again mods to cure my save file).

Anyway I don't know what to do anymore. This is way too confusing. Any help is appreciated.

EDIT: Alright, disabling bashed patch at least allows me to save. Recently downloaded quest mods being disabled and bashed patch enabled makes it crash. Why does it even happen and what bashed patch has to do with it....

Hi tenebris 1. Sorry that you're experiencing this, it's a major pain.

I'm working three jobs right now and have a baby, so I don't have a lot of free time, but I have a few thoughts that might steer you in the right path based on others' experiences here.

First, removing ANY mod is almost always going to cause the temporary fixes that you have described (this has been discussed in the earlier parts of the thread). These fixes are are just band-aids and will always catch back up to you, for me it was typically around 4 hours into the game. My suspicion of the removal of the bash patch is that the engine reads this as one of those mod removals, and is going to be symptomatic again in a short time.

Second, it looks like you tried one of two confirmed fixes by making the max save file larger through engine fixes, but it might be that your mod list has so many scripts firing that the even the enlarged size can't even handle that many. In this case, It sounds like you definitely need to remove AND CLEAN your save using ReSaver (not just the REFR). Have you done that step? I didn't see it in your post.

Again, I'm not an expert, but between these two most are reporting success. If you could post step by step how you follow the first fix we can rule out that as an option for you.

It's a sad day in Skyrim when this happens

I had this happen to me on a very stable playthrough with a mild load order containing bashed/smashed patches, no mods uninstalled during mid game. No ctd for 70 hours only to happen for the first time on saving. Normal saving, autosave, quicksave all ended up with a ctd. No lagging, glitches prior to save hinting a script lag, and also fallrim detected no unattached instances/undefined elements. I always make new saves and had around 400 saves, deleted half of the old saves to make space if it had anything to do with that.

Secondly, I have audio overhaul and vortex had been giving me a SNCT save plugin dll error but I was ignoring it. I removed that dll as per instructions on that mod's page, and I was able to save again, been playing for a couple of hours and now can save normally. I don't know if it was related with those methods but skyrim is weird anything that seems irrelevant may end up being the cause so maybe it was due to that.

As per the guidance here, I modified EngineFixes.ini to <SaveGameMaxSize = true>

I came here after some lengthy googling, and this change instantly fixed it for me. Thanks!

This did it for me, too. I had tried the player.kill, the coc qasmoke and pcb, and plain old removing mods -nothing worked but this. Thank you.

squireoivanhoe, I just want to thank you for saving my save game. I had a bug with Legacy of the Dragonborn version 4.x. with its radiant quest (removed on version 5.x.) That kept on looping and stacking active scripts. I tried all other methods and didn't work, but after reading your post on the birds, it made me check in Resaver.

45k active scripts from that one LotD quest! No wonder my game was such a slog and finally died out when saving. Ot now saves so fast, and I don't get constant stutter anymore.

Once again, thank you!

My pleasure! Glad to hear that you got it working. This is a heartbreaking bug so I know the pain. I'm just glad that we now have more than one solution!

And even after reinstalling everything, and following all the steps it is happening with my save again. Though this time, and actually every other time accept the first one, it happens after I have been summoned by the Greybeards. I'm really not in the mood to fuss with the special addition anymore. I'm probably overlooking something obvious.

That sounds like a specific mod issue to me. Did those playthroughs have varying lengths up to being summoned?
