Another Reason the Settlement System is Crap

The building system in Fallout 4 is an abortion. If you want to see how to do it right, look at any Sims game. First off. The idea of using the player to "hold" the items to be built in first person no less, practically in your face, was moronic. Not allowing you to zoom out and see the overview of your settlement was moronic. Not having a "snap to" grid system overlay was moronic. After fighting this stupid system for a couple of hours, I can't see how anyone could have the patience to deal with the totally un-user-friendly building interface.

The most simple construction project, leveling the ground...not possible. Seriously? You mean to tell me that a settlement of able bodied men and women can't use shovels and other implements to prepare the ground for a cement foundation? Every single game I've ever played where you build structures, be it the Sims, Roller Coaster Tycoon, whatever allows you to terraform before building. Not Fallout 4. It's as if they are treating the settlers like ignorant aborigines. There are thousands of pre-war books available to teach people how to rebuild their civilization..and if nothing else, the Wanderer knows about construction, at least enough to teach them how to level ground. They can build sophisticated power generators, but can't level ground to build a house? My father and I leveled an entire quarter acre with nothing but shovels, rakes and pickaxes when I was a teenager. That's certainly enough for a reasonable sized structure. A settlement full of men and women could level the whole town if need be.

I have never seen a more unwieldy construction system in any game ever. And I'm 67 and have been playing games since the Atari 2600.

This game was rushed out the door with little to no concern for its shortcomings. That much is obvious.

I didn't even look at the dates. I recently started playing Fallout 4 and I posted about my frustration with a bad system. It may be an old thread, but you know what, I found it so someone else might also. And one year old on a forum is not necromancy, unless you're a 20 year old who thinks a song a year old is an oldie. And from what I read (although I didn't read every post), some of my issues haven't even been mentioned, like the lack of terraforming abilities in the game.

Why would there be terraforming in a post-apoc game where civilization is still entirely agricultural with limited tools and manpower? Also yes, it is forum necromancy. Year old threads do count as old on a forum.

I think I made my reasoning pretty clear. If a group of settlers can create generators and electricity, porcelain items and metal structures, then surely they can level ground with shovels, rakes, pickaxes, and other hand held implements. That was the kind of terraforming I was referring to, not creating mountains and lakes. And just because something is dated, doesn't make it irrelevant. As I said, I found this thread so maybe someone else might also. Not everyone played Fallout 4 when it was first out. It's still being sold on sale at Steam so one would surmise that it is still being played by new players. And frankly, I'm wondering why you are here now if it's that's old of a thread...and why you care that someone is still posting on it since you are obviously not the OP.

So you didn't get the game of the year edition which adds concrete foundations (listed under structures/concrete/floors in the build menu) through wasteland workshop (I believe its that or one of the other crafting DLCs)? Pretty easy to make flat surfaces with those. Yes exactly, you had to search for this year-long dead thread, dig up its rotting corpse and perform blasphemous human sacrifice to resurrect this dead topic. If this game has been around so long, then so has its complaints, so by your reasoning you should have already known this.

I'm not saying I disagree with you that the building system is crap, but that's what mods are for. Plenty of building mods out there for you to pursue that might fix your problem with the game - though I doubt it will fully alleviate your woes. There is even a mod out there that unblocks achievements when using mods, if your concerned about that sort of thing, if thats whats stopping you from the modding the game.
