Merscil
Hi, I have recently made an armor and weapons compilation mod for my personal use (and to get to know the creation kit). I wanted it to be a light armor set on par with the Glass set. So, in the creation kit, I duplicated all the glass items, smithing recipes and tempering recipes but adjusted the materials (tempering to steel) and gave them new names. I also made a new material for the set. Now in game when I craft my armor set at the forge it has the exact same armor values as glass, as intended, but for some reason, when I try to temper it with fortify smithing gear and potions the glass armor can be tempered further then my set. I would like to know if there is something I've forgotten? Perhaps because I made a new material for my armor set that isn't in the game it doesn't benefit from the perk? It is an exact copy of the glass ones though. It is strange because I don't see any references to the material itself in the glass smithing perk. Or perhaps it doesn't benefit from the fortify smithing gear? edit:I have tested the values with only fortify smithing gear and these are the results:helm base value: 38 -> tempered modded material: 52 / tempered glass: 68 -> gained armor mod: 52-38=14/ gained armor glass: 68-38=30glove base value: 25 -> tempered modded material: 40 / tempered glass: 56 -> gained armor mod: 40-25=15/ gained armor glass: 56-25=31 So the value gained by tempering glass armor is approximately twice that of the value gained by tempering my modded armor, and since this game probably rounds its values I think this pretty much confirms that my new material doesn't get the x2 tempering bonus from the smithing perk, even though all the items I've made require that perk to be craftable at the forge. So I guess my question becomes, how can I make a new material work with the existing perks bonuses for tempering? Novem99
If I got you right and you created a new armor material like "ArmorMaterialGlass, ArmorMaterialSteel etc." then you have to add this new material to the respective perk. http://fs5.directupload.net/images/170310/39rzvtjw.jpg This is where you have to add your new armor material. Otherwise it won't benefit from any smithing perk.

When I doubleclick on that entry list it looks different from yours, it is completely empty, even though I have loaded skyrim.esm and update.esm (also dawnguard.esm), is this normal? I don't want my mod to erase stuff. Also when mod authors upload their armor and weapon mods publicly, I suppose they usually don't bother with this? Since it'll create incompatibility with other mods that alter the perks right? Edited March 10, 2017 by Merscil
Novem99
You also have to select "Item". I guess you are still on the "Perk Owner" window. edit: I recommend to just copy one of the existing entries and substitute the keyword with your new one. edit 2: Most weapon/armor mods I know don't change the perks. Nonetheless I already have seen some mods doing this. So you are right: once you changed a perk it becomes not compatible with mods that also modify this particular perk. I don't understand what you mean by "selecting item". I can make a new entry by rightclicking and I can replicate those seen in your screenshot, but as you can see for me there are no existing entries in that window. http://i.imgur.com/AsFrvhm.jpg Edited March 10, 2017 by Merscil
