So many mods to choose, where to start?

Hi,

After a recent PC hardware upgrade I've decided to give Oblivion another try since my last attempt a couple of years ago wasn't particularly enjoyable due to frame-rate issues and the general buggy-ness of the game upon it's release.

I've had a look at the Mods and I'm totally stunned by how many there are now, when I last looked there was only about 1,000 and now there is ten times that amount.

I did download a fair few mods when I first bought the game as I was never happy with the standard version particularly the levelling system for both character and the bad guys.

If it helps I can give you guys an idea of what I'm looking for to help narrow down the selection, gotta bear with me as I'm going by memory here as I've since deleted all the files.

So, things I originally downloaded were:

Saddlebags & Call Steed mod (still the one worth going for?)

The Nexus (speed travel only allowed between the major towns)

Character levelling mod (there were several but they made levelling a character seem better then through multipliers)

Birthsigns (a wider range of birthsigns to choose on start up)

NPC level mod (so they don't level up along with my character)

Loot mod (level of loot now fits with the above change in NPC levelling)

Thieving mod (guards awareness lowered, loot actually worth stealing)

Bow & Arrow combat mods (make long range combat a viable option)

Merchants Mod (so I can sell the more expensive items in game)

UI mod (so the menu's look more PC then Xbox)

I have tried looking through the Mods but there are so many versions all doing similar things that it really is hard to know which to choose. I'll worry about textures and general graphical mods later unless there are any which should be installed asap to make the game better.

Apologies for length of post.

Well these are my immediate suggestions:

saddle bags

http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=2219

Nexus fast-travel

http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=2108

(enables fasttravel to any major city that you've visited before)

Birthsigns

http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=12149

(This adds several birthsigns to the game)

Even though you didn't ask for it, i'de go ahead and get this too:

saurion red lights

http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=12551

( Warning!!!! This particular mod adds some adult-content to the game. It's not even finished but there is a NPC who can actually change your birthsign if you'de like)

Bow and Arrow combat

http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=3074

or

http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=10715

(Both of these mods increase damage and therefore effectivness of arrows and or bows, but they do it in different ways and degrees, so the choice is entirely yours)

Merchants

http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=2421

(This mod increased the available gold amounts for merchants, I believe thats what you were looking for)

I'll keep looking for the rest and will post them as soon as I have anything substantial. Hope this helps!

Welcome back. I hope your upgrade allows you to play.

Look at the top 100. These are mods that are popular and stable. Then, every mod on Tesnexus has a dedicated thread. Any problems or glitches should show up there along with some comments on how well it works. Look at the ratings. Any mod that is above 9.0 is probably a reasonably good one.

Don't make the mistake of loading in more than one mod that modifies the same thing, like a body replacement. Usually the last one installed will just overwrite stuff from the earlier one, but sometimes you will get unexpected results. Check out the forum threads on these to see just what kind of unexpected results you can expect.

Don't make the mistake of loading in a dozen or so mods before you begin. That is asking for trouble. Start with a few simple mods. Test them in a game. then add more, testing after every 5 or so. If it is a particularly large mod - such as Lost Spires, load that one separately and test it. If there is a problem, come back to the forums for advice.

Then, many of the newer mods require OBSE (Oblivion Script extender) this is not a mod, but a program that must be loaded before Oblivion. Read the read me before starting to install. Then, I recommend OBMM (Oblivion Mod Manager) to help manage your mods. Again, not a mod but a program that must be loaded before Oblivion. OBMM includes a built in Oblivion Launcher that will automatically start OBSE if it is on your system.

Don't expect Oblivion on a PC to be as stable as a console game. But we can do so much more with it that I pity those who play it on a console.

Okay, here are a few more:

Unscaled Enemies

(There are alot of these, but this is the one I use)

Loot

http://www.tesnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=1952

( I couldn't find a mod that did exactly what you described, so this is as close as I can get)

Hope this helps.
