GTX 1080 Issues

Ok guys, so here's my issue. Bought a ASUS STRIX ROG GTX1080 A8G upgrading from a ASUS 1060-Dual 6GB GPU. I noticed a slight improvement in FPS in open world. But not the improvement I thought. Im always at 60FPS indoors but in settlements my FPS is only about 3-5fps higher then it was with the 1060. Hanging around 28 and dropping to 17 at times. After the 1080 TI's hit the market I picked up another card (Same Model) on the cheap. Ive enabled SLI and done every single performance tweak I can think of with absolutely zero improvement in game performance. Im left scratching my head and almost at the point of a complete fresh install of the game. I even uninstalled every single Graphics mod I had without a change. The situation is actually pissing me off, as its frustrating to see people running around at a caped 60fps and only dropping to low 48 downtown and hovering around 55. PC Stats are listed below

Â

AMD FX 8350 OC 4.4GHz

32 GB Ballistix 1600 MHz Ram

ASUS TUF 990 FX R.3

ASUS GTX 1080 SLI A8G

Â

I understand that AMD is not the best CPU for gaming. But other people are having no problems with theirs. Im at a loss. I was thinking about going SSD just for my games. But from what Ive seen fallout 4 only improves slightly mostly noticeable when loading.Â

Â

EDIT: I love Bethesdas Game Concepts but right now I want to smash something and scream their name like some cheap action drama hero

What shadow settings do you have? From my own experience (with both a GTX 970 and a 1070), setting shadow distance to 'high' or 'ultra' kills the frame rate, particularly in Boston. With the 1070, I've seen drops down below 40 fps with shadow distance Ultra, but a rock steady 60 fps everywhere with it set to 'medium'.

I have heard a rumour that the shadows are generated by the CPU, not the GPU, hence upgrading to the latest and greatest GPU won't help.

They're set to medium, I'm left scratching my head. I'm thinking about setting all graphics settings to medium in an effort to see if there's a change. I did a complete fresh/clean install of the latest GPU Drivers. On a interesting note when I enable multi-threading using console II'll jump in FPS for a short time but it doesn't last very long. It seems a lot of people have the same issue as me but none of their fixes seem to work nore are they very clear. The other half are maxed out in fps and rarely drop below 50 with 254 activated mods Edited by ninjai_ruken

At maximum eye candy, the performance difference between a stock 3.4 or 3.5GHz P5 (or P7 etc) and an overclocked (4.2/4.4/etc) Intel is substantial, and you'll see benefits in FO4 at the faster speeds. Meanwhile an AMD 8350 even at 4.4GHz is about 80% as fast as a 3.5GHz P5. So I'm not sure what there is to wonder about. Your northbridge speed is just over half of a P5's etc.

Try upgrading to a more current cpu and see if performance improves, or cut down a bit on the graphics. Also try resetting any video profiles for the game that you might have customized, and check your oblivion.ini file for any obsolete/unwanted/incorrect/impractical settings (such as increasing iShadowMapResolution to ridiculously large numbers etc).

I'll work on some new OC profiles. I do enable multi-threading through console command using the bat command and it will jump up another 5%. I plan on my next build being an Intel based build but that's not even close at this point in time as I recently moved to a new state. I'll keep plugging away. I'm sure I'll figure it out. I'll try the above recommended suggestions first that point to a better OC Profile

Hi

I have a GTX 1080 on my old i7 2600 rig & run the game at 3440 X 1440. My frame rate is in the 70s without vsync. This game has an old engine & favors CPUs with strong individual cores. I use Passmarks single thread performance chart for my CPU purchases. https://www.cpubenchmark.net/singleThread.html

I also play on a i7 6700 based rig with 2x GTX 980 ti & run the game at 4k. SLI for this game is the worsted. I get less than 20fps over a single GPU. Since I am over 60fps everywhere I am not complaining.

My game load times have not changed going from a HD to a SSN. My game is stutter free on the SSD & unplayable with stutter on high level character saves on a standard HD. Surprisingly the game played better on my old 10,000rpm Raptor.

My next SSD perches will be a M.2. As far as I am concerned Sata SSDs are not fast enough.

From everything Im reading people are getting better performance on the older GPU Cards and Intel builds or a newer 1000 Series only if the system is Intel. I went with a 8350 because its what was available at the time within my price budget. And now even with the Zen craze dying down I still think my next build will still be Intel.I had a intel rig I built back in 07 with two GTX 9800 in SLI and that system laste

Before running FO4 try ctrl-alt-del (or just run Task Manager) and look through your currently running programs. Anything from anti-malware to hacked video or audio codecs can slow down a system's overall performance. Also look through the list of installed programs on your system and uninstall anything you don't need.

A gpu can't do everything, and the same tales of performance woe in Bethesda games are routinely heard from low-end Intel users at least as often as AMD owners. IMO if you're investing $900 for a graphics card, first invest $200-300 for a motherboard and cpu that can utilize the card's power. :)

Thank you for the advice, I've done this already and don't have much installed on my system, This is a fresh install of windows 10 pro 64 with only around 7 games installed on a separate HD. Its funny because I run Batman Arkham Knight at 60fps, Fallout Farcry at 60 and GTAV very rarely drops down below 50 fps. Even though the game is poorly optimized maybe it just does perform better on a intel system.\

As a side note ive even set the CPU preference for the game to 'High' I do have a multi threading txt file in the game directory that I run in console command and it will jump my FPS up a bit. But not enough to satisfy me. If I had been thinking right and done a little more research I could have picked up a intel mobo and chipset for around the same price I payed for my second GTX 1080.
