Animated lights on armour.

Sup guys. I'm in the early concept stages of my next fallout project which i will begin in earnest once my two skyrim projects are tied up. I'm just curious about what, if any, options I have for animated lights on the armour. Like could i maybe use a giff as a glow map or would it need to be more complicated and handled through the material?

This is awesome to hear, having heard of and seen some of your previous projects and effects,

I am optimistic and looking forward to what you might have in mind for FO4.

 

 

 

apologies for the fan-person-ness,

its just, the different kinds of effects you've been able to achieve so far are fairly awesome.

I digress,

 

There are several projects in the pipeline,

which will hopefully allow textures such as .gif, .swf and other things,

to be dynamic read-write etc.

besides being useful as a "TV" or "light",

this will allow you to create animations on surfaces, and combine those with a linked light-instance.

the light 'bleeds through' the layer-switching, so as to only be visible through the transparencies you put on the texture.

this won't work for precombined stuff at the moment, so other approaches will be needed for building interiors and the such like.

 

It is very easy comparatively for a lot of folks to make 2D animations for things,

and so they could make them as 'sprites' for a lot of things.

I think you can achieve 'lights' on armor that way, using a 'glow',

and you will find Tilarta's insights into that of some use.

that contains the values that produced different diffraction effects and there are some great

vimeo vids on how to get glows and layered transparencies in Unity to work.

I don't think you can control opacity and brightness from just the RGB maps though.

you just anchor a lightsource inside the object, and use cut-out transparencies.

 

have fun experimenting too with

ishihara, demoivre, mandelbrot, doppler, escher, etc diffraction patterns on things too -

it does interesting things under different lighting conditions!

you can get an object to have different shadows, or change color depending on light and viewing angle.

see the "UV Blacklight pipboy project" etc, it's cool!

 

also, have fun trying to make different effects,

like lava-lamps or lenticular surfaces, plasma arcs,

and holograms.

 

 

 

I hope there are some ideas there that are of use for you,

and I look forward to seeing what awesome stuff you can come up with in FO4

 

I will be keen to see what inroads can be made in this area too,

and look forward to hearing how other modders have achieved some of the effects that go into their mods.

Well that's quite the helpful response. Forgive my modesty but I have 1 fallout 4 mod and 1 oldrim mod on release. I haven't exactly broken any new ground with either, just did my thing my way. But thanks anyway.

I'm a little surprised to see someone so clued up on the mod scene with no actual released mods though. If you're so in to it why not take a shot a producing some content. Ithink you'll really enjoy it.
