I think you need the Catalyst 12.1 driver package installed to support this card, also you may have to try out the Preview Driver Package. http://support.amd.c...RC11Driver.aspx

It´s really annoying ...because I had bought ATI 7970 for playing Skyrim (too).... I have this same problem with a 7950 I installed this morning. It worked fine last week with my 5770 but I hadn't tried the new patch on that card. I just asked about this in the Steam forums but have no reply yet: "This morning I installed a new ATI 7950 swapping from a 5770. Now when I launch Skyrim it detects settings to LOW? Has no AA or AF options other than OFF and has no Resolution options at all, it's all blank and when I try to launch I get a get "failed to initialize render" error msg I've tried windows mode and get a "failed to recognize adapter" msg too. I have tried editing config files using a SkyConfig tool to custom the res and AA & AF to on but that doesn't seem to work either still giving me the same render error msg. I'm using the 11.12 drivers that ATI's site recommended." I haven't tried the 12.1 drivers as I'm sure I read they don't support the 7 series. Same with me dude Skyrim was the game I was most looking forward to trying out on the new card! EDITI ended up re-installing Skyrim and that sorted it somehow if anyone else has this problem. Cheers for you help. Edited February 5, 2012 by machinebummer
CONTRABARDUS
Chances are, if you're upgrading from an older AMD graphics card, you put two dll files into your Skyrim directory so that the game would run properly. One called "atimgpud.dll" and another called "atiumdag.dll". Get rid of them, it's what's causing the problem. I spent the better part of two days trying to figure this out, and it was a palm slap to my head when I deleted them both and found everything worked fine again. Well, better than fine, as I'm now running it on a 7970. Textures pimped out with mods, tweaked the ini for more distance with LOD and such, and it's running as smooth as butter on a single screen, even in 3D. Problem solved. I know this is an old post, but I noticed something in my case. With the files you mentioned, I had no issues with them up through the Catalyst 12.6 release. Once I tried installing 12.8 or anything after that, I would get the "failed to render" error and noting but a black screen. However I do have the latest release (12.10) but I did what you suggested and it works. I wonder why it does this, or do those DLLs get updated. I will let AMD know in their forums. Anyway, thanks for this, I was stuck on 12.6 for months until I found this fix  .
