Cpu cooler and Ram

Recommended Posts

Hey all

Just a friendly warning if you plan on buying a nice cpu cooler like mine PH-TC14PE make sure you buy low profile ram(height), stay away from Corsair Vengeance and any other Ram that has a high profile... I gotta chop like 3mm off the top of the 'fins' tomorrow. I've been reading about this problem, and thought I'd share my problem and possibly warn people about it.

I've been reading about this problem and people's solution was to chop the top of the fins... seeing as it's an air cooled system and the way I plan to position the fan it should take any excess heat out from the modules anyways.

So good luck and shop smarter than I did.

there is never a reason to have any heat fins really on RAM, they dont get hot enough, even on OCed ones, but i prefer low profile anyways, for this reason, but i also think high profile looks ugly.

but as much as you need to watch your RAM, you need to watch your heatsink. when you want to buy a heatsink, go visit its web page and they almost always have a list of compatible RAM that will fit on it based on its heat spreaders.

Wait - don't do it.

You don't have to - the POS heatsinks on Corsair Vengeance are very easily removed. Take a piece of plastic or wood, slide it under the heatsink from the slot side and carefully force it up. Don't use a knife or anything, just plastic, work from a corner. Then the other corner, and on the opposite side. It's held by some very weak glue (like chewing gum) on top of the modules.

The "heatsink" is actually just two thin sheets of aluminum, it's hollow inside and useless for cooling. Your RAM will be cooler without these "heatsinks".

Be careful not to tear apart a small sticker on the top, it holds the two pieces together. Then put the heatsinks into the package this RAM came in, keep that package in your mobo box together with the rest of the bundle.

That way you'll be able to put the heatsinks back on for appearance, should you need to RMA it (rare, but just in case) or if you're going to sell it someday.

Thanks I was looking at that earlier... and all I saw was empty space above the module itself. I'll give it a shot. and the way the fans on the cooler are positioned anyways they'll be sucking out any potential heat.

Much appreciated.

Go with H60 liquid cooler. You won't regret it.

they give a nice clean look to the inside of your case but thats about it. there is just no reason (other then look) to get them over an air heatsink of the same price. i would say get the H60 if it was $40, but at $70, you can get an air heat sink that will absolutely crush the H60 for less of a price.

even in push pull, there are numerous reviews out there that say it just doesnt perform to that of a good air cooler. the D14 or Silver Arrow or Havik, can all beat out any of the liquid coolers. the H100 keeps up with them though, in push/pull.

the the D14 and the Silver Arrow are Huge, the Havik is a single tower cooler and can match both of them. as i said, you get the H series for its clean low profile look. you get air heatsinks if you want performance Edited by hoofhearted4
