Anatorax
I have an AMD 6850 and it works fine. Definitely, enough to run it on High. There is a new generation of AMD card coming out soon, so the current 6xxx cards will fall in price, but that would not be too soon. Check eBay, you may be able to get the card you want for less. Generally, I have never had any issues with PC hardware from eBay. Just read reviews of any particular model before you buy, so that it doesn't sound like a plane engine in your room. (Or get the card with cheapest cooler and replace it with a custom one.)
thesapien
Funny, you mentioned being a fan of nVidia until they did something to kind of screw you. I remember for years being exclusive to nVidia probably around the same time period. I got screwed on advertised features that were discovered later to never work on my card, as advertised. The features finally came with updated drivers for later cards but my line of cards had a hardware conflict, as it turned out. I still stuck with them until their cards started running really HOT without overclocking which was a problem for non-game 3D rendering requiring already a very active CPU. I was forced to give ATI a try. Now, it just depends on current reviews for me. I also agree that to run vanilla Skyrim doesn't require you to cough up more than you're already willing to spend and not be able to eat. I'd even add that the included in-game settings for higher graphics don't do much to improve Skyrim. Mostly these settings just makes your GPU work a lot harder for not much gain in the final imagine. It's only when you go beyond the vanilla game that you can really start seeing a difference, and then spending more on a GPU really matters. Illiad86
My 5770 runs Skyrim on close to Ultra settings (ie: no AA, 8x AF, No FXAA, Detail Tab on Ultra or High, View Distance tab sliders at max) fine, so I'd imagine the 6770 would run even better. The 6770 is the same as the 5770 except that it uses a little less power...same core clock, same amount of stream processors, etc. Have the same card myself (5770). 4xAA, 16xAF, no FXAA, Ultra, sliders maxed, 1920x1200. Very smooth indoors and I'd say about 45-60 outdoors. Skips a little bit, but it's Bethesda lol. Did a test on my boyfriend's 3870 and that card even blows it out of the water. Skryim is as much GPU dependent as it is CPU though, we both have quad cores running at 4.0GHz. Having a CPU above 3.0GHz helps a lot. The 6870 is a nice card for the price. I haven't kept up much on what's out these days...but pretty much any video card in the 125-160 dollar range will let you play Skyrim on max or near max settings. PsxMeUP
Alls I can say is ATI sucks if you want to run Linux, but who cares, Skyrim doesn't run on Linux...
MorwynKelm
6950 is a very solid workhorse that will last. Look around, you can find one for your budget. Top Ramen, dude.
Rennn
i need to replace my GPU, i was thinking an ATI HD6770, i saw a new one for $110us. anyone know how it does with skyrim? My brother can get ultra at 30-50fps and 1600x900 on his HD6770. My GTX 460 is comparable, but better, and I get a steady 60fps outdoors on ultra without any trouble, at a resolution of 1440x900.ENB is trouble in certain spots (like the Fall Forest) for me, however. ENB with SSAO makes me drop my graphics to medium to get a very stable 30fps. From what I hear, a GTX 550 TI or 560 is a very nice card, but a bit expensive for the price range you listed. Edlennion
That sounds like good value, I'd go for that 6850. I use a 6870 which is similar (a touch better but more expensive) and vanilla runs fine maxed out except AA turned down slightly, so I imagine the 6850 will be similar and shouldn't have any trouble. Rennn
It sounds like the 6850 is your best option. That's a good price for a good card.
