Some sort of Mage-build

Hey people,

I was wondering if anyone has done this build before: http://skyrimcalculator.com/#81541

Major:

Alteration: obviously for beefing my armor when only wearing robes, and resisting magic.

Conjuration: atronachs, zombies and bound sword (up 'til oblivion binding for the close quarter fights).

Illusion: left and right tree.

Restoration: everything except wards and dualcasting.

Minor:

Alchemy: Up to Benefactor.

Enchanting: speaks for itself.

As you can see, I have no offensive magic at hand, just summoning, defensive and healing magics. I won't get to melee unless absolutely necessary.

At higher levels I will be able to walk around with a 4-man warparty (sounds like good ol' NWN or DA:O to me!)

- Myself as summoner/healer.

- Melee Follower, likely some tank like Lydia (like, because no way I want her anywhere near me  ).

- Caster Flame Atronach.

- Caster/melee raised dead thing.

Sounds like a lot of fun to me, but are there people here who tried the same thing and ended up switching to Destruction because they want to jump into the fray as well?

Yeah, I'm gonna use bound sword, but I attempt to steer away from melee combat for these reasons:

1. Keep an overview of the area.

2. Can summon a new thing without being interrupted.

3. Heal my tank/atronach/zombie.

4. Well, I'm a caster

It looks viable though you'll probably wind up minoring in a weapon skill or two if bound weapons become a habit. Also, what do you plan to upgrade in terms of stats? Are you going to go for the 100% spell reduction enchant strategy?

As a low/mid level conjuror, flame atronachs are a great choice. Animating undead other than dead thralls though isn't very effective since the duration simply stinks and half the time, the battle is already over after you kill the first guy.

As for the four man war party, towards the end, you'll likely prefer to have two dead thrall mages because they have a better AI than atronachs in my opinion. Dremora lords are the best melee summons and with the right perks, can be summoned at a respectable distance like the atronachs.

You may also considering finding a dog follower to make it a four man party + canine.

AFAIK you can't heal any of your summons. They also deal nearly zero damage and are unable to kill anything at end-game level range and even get almost oneshotted. You're gonna have to rely on your follower to deal damage, which isn't exactly what most players are going to enjoy simply because you get no experience for anything they do.

Even dead thrall Volkihar Vampires? I haven't reached past lvl 40 yet so I can't testify as to how useful conjuration will be at higher levels. All I know is that dead thrall mages are damned fun to use.

Generally later in the main quest, summons seem to freak out in a lot of areas. Mostly in Blackreach and also the

Temple with the portal to Sovngarde

, any summons will just constantly run away or stop following you in some other way. Often it's enough to enter another zone with one of the thralls not close enough to you, then you go back out and they're dead on the floor.

So basically i think that the dead thralls are a complete waste of time to maintain.

To each their own. I do know what you mean when it comes to dead thrall reliability issues but they are generally manageable. Worse comes to worse, I leave them behind at the entrance and use dremora lords/storm atronachs until I find some suitable replacements in the dungeon I am wondering in. Any hassles are worth the extra artillery and uniqueness the dead thralls brings for me, especially when unique thralls spout random dialogue. Edited by justwannaddl
