Krutz
I have been editing my .ini files located C:\Users\Username\Documents\My Games\Skyrim and they don't seem to affect anything, specifically the shadows. I have the settings in the launcher set to ULTRA, but when the game launches and I start to play, everything looks to be mid-range, its like its the ini settings are not being applied to the game, but instead some kind of auto detect video card settings. I have modded Oblivion, Fallout 3 and New Vegas before. I am familiar with Bethesda ini files and how they work. luxwing0go
Delete (or move) the .ini from your save folder and let Skyrim make a new one. Sometimes you need to reset it because it gets funky or something. :/

Also I would like to note that the .ini files "do not" reset. I have looked at them after I have played and the changes seem to remain. It just seems that changing the ini file doesn't do anything for me.
Dastardlybob
do you use notepad++?If so you have to close the ini file in notepad, if not the ini file doesn't look like it was changed even if you did change it.

You are correct, I do use notepad++ and I do click on the tab and close the ini file after I have edited it. It still doesn't help, but thanks for your suggestion. PrincessBridget
I had this happen to me before and discovered I had a .ini in the data folder called [somemodname].ini! It had like literally every ini line in there and Skyrim was looking to that first apparently. So I deleted it and all was well again. So I'd say look in your data folder for ini files that might have things that belong in Skyrim.ini (I can't remember what mod it was that did it to me, and I remember being unsure if I did it by console somehow or if it was the mod. But I deleted it all anyway. :P)

I'll try to look for an out of place .ini file, but it's more than likely that its not there. Thank you for taking you time to try to help me out. I had a look in my directory and the only .ini files I could find are low, medium, high, very high, and skyrim_default Edited February 8, 2012 by Krutz

But other than that, could it be you're just editing ones that give a subtle effect? I know this one makes a huge difference in my shadows.iShadowMapResolution=512 (changing to 2048 or 4096...)
