Lower performance and CTDs after playing for a while

Recommended Posts

I've been playing Fallout 4 since it has released, but every time an update is released, my performance suffers, for unknown reasons. Up until the 1.8 update, I managed it by installing performance mods, thus allowing me to play, but since the 1.9 update, even with the mods, I get 5-15 fps. As a comparison, before the update I'd get about 20-35 fps.I'll be putting my specs down below, for anyone interested (I know they are garbage, and I should not be able to play, but I've managed so far). This leads to my second problem: the CTD, as in multiple every hour or so. I have tried disabling the mods one by one, but as I have about 60 or so mods, it took a while and it did not resolve the problem. For anyone interested, I'll link my mods below. Does anyone have any idea why it keeps happening?

Having 1gb of vram and 4gb of ram, color me impressed that you've managed to play with those specs. Your hardware is definitely the cause of the performance issues, so you're in need of a few upgrades.

It likely also explains the frequent CTD you've been experiencing - if your already playing on the lowest settings for everything, there isn't much else you can do unfortunately short of buying more ram and upgrading your gpu to one with at least 3gb.

Not sure why the 1.9 update in particular has affected you, but this is Bethesda we're talking about. Around the 1.5 update they managed to lower performance by implementing a texture streaming process (it's meant to improve loading times by streaming textures, but has the side effect of causing huge vram spikes, even on 8gb gpu's)

Sorry I can't be of any more help.

Fair enough, I said that my PC is crap. I'll try some more tweaks here and there , maybe I'll get it working.

@agreatweight

A LOT of what you stated was spot on but you missed 2 VERY important things

1) no unofficial patch in his mod list - http://www.nexusmods.com/fallout4/mods/4598/?

2) no bashed or merged patch

@xenotomix

You can NOT use that many mods with out some kind of patch file, please do ALL of my guide and let me know if you need more help and also if the problem is fixed :)

Will do, forgot to download the patch, I usually install it. I made the game run, somehow, using the FO4 Config Tool, lowering the shadows and other such things. I still can't go into downtown, but I expected as much.

Ah, my bad. I tend to skim over the first few entries on a listed load order when I see the .esm's for DLC. Plus I'd been awake for over twenty hours when I responded, and falsely assumed it was in there. Thanks for the correction.

@xenotomix Apologies for missing that, the unofficial patch is an essential mod!

edit: following gromulos's guide is a good idea.

I did install the patch, works as I mentioned before, all good and dandy. But the problem with the CTDs still is there: my game freezes and crashes to desktop without any warning or error.

are you positive that there are no orange or red mods in Wrye Bash? Unless you are using a broken save that is the only thing that could be causing this

Note that when you update your game...your ini setting go back to default . Meaning if you had a tweaked ini you have to re-do it.

Also note that not enough ram/vram and virtual memory are easily the cause of random CTDs . ( im guessing youre having overheating issues with your vid card as well

since youre pushing it way past its limits to play this game.

But seriously bro...

Trade that poor excuse of a vid card for anything else and you will have 5X better performance.

Not that I wouldn't change my video card, I'd change my computer as a whole, but I have no money whatsoever. It'll take some time to save the money required for a medium to high-end PC, so I'll keep pushing my AMD until I can fry sausages on it, or until my house burns down.
