Scripting help-- Divine Smite

I want to start working on a mod that enables the PC to use the "Divine Smite" ability, as the paladins of D&D and many other systems use. Basically, you can use your magical power to infuse your melee weapon with extra damage, usually light/radiant damage. However, I have no idea how to go about scripting this; truth be told, my scripting experience involves giving the Player a new ability on equipping a ring (and this was done in Oblivion's engine, I haven't even figured that out for Skyrim.) That's all I've ever done. Links to sites with info on scripting something similar, to direct help, to even critizism for my idea would all be appreciated. The basic concept is: Cast lesser power, spends X amount of Magicka, adds Y=(X/2) radiant (2x damage vs undead, normal damage everything else) or other element as damage to the next melee attack with visuals. It sounds simple in theory-- spend 50 magicka, your next attack does 25 extra damage-- but again, I have literally NO experience scriptng, and I'm sure this will require it. If it's possible, I'd like the castings to stack, so you could cast it again and again to increase your next hit damage (this enables it to scale well with level, as long as you invest in magicka). If possible, it should be limited to melee weapons only, and unequiping the weapon looses the smite. I'd LOVE to make the smites cost less/do more damage based on Restoration skill/perks, but that sounds like even more difficult. Any tips, advice, and ideas would be appreciated.

This is easier than you think. There is a magic effect archetype that adds a temporary enchantment to your equipped weapon. No scripting required.
