legendaryJay
Hey guys, im new with modding and have been messing around with dialogues for a few hours. i was wondering a few things:1 how to initiate conversations with custom npcs like creatures (i have created dialogue, but havent figured out how to initiate it)2 how to create an npc that can become a follower or be told to go home i dont expect to be babied, all i guess i need is either a mod to look at or a good tut or set of tuts to look through. i am a beginner and would really like to learn. i am using creation kit. Sorry if this is in the wrong place
CampanaAliquanta
To create your new follower, can you just duplicate one that already exists and then amend it?
David Brasher
One really useful approach is reverse engineering. Pick a companion, like Lydia for instance, and go examine her and dissect her settings and dialog and scripting in the CK. Try copying her and creating a new NPC very much like her. Play-test to see how far you go before she breaks. The break point can give you clues on what to look for when scrutinizing the real Lydia. You may catch on to the detail you missed so that you can change it and get further in your next play-test before things break. (In spite of my ignorance of the new system, I can tell you that you will probably need a new quest or need to edit the existing identity quest conditions in order to make a new NPC into a companion. You will want to pay attention to how the quest variable or other variable works that is a condition for wait and follow. You may need to create a new variable for this purpose.) legendaryJay
i did try that, but i think you are right- that is my best bet. does anyone know if it is possible to talk to animilas and such that normally dont have dialogue?
David Brasher
While playing the game, I have talked to a dog, a hagraven, and a dremora. So I believe that it is quite possible.
Noobo
for Q1.You need to give your dialogue conditions. i.e. which NPC that says it,When they can say it I use the quest box - dialogueview tab to assign dialogue to NPCs, but there should be another way
RbtRvltin
I actually copied the Dark Brotherhood Initiate, renamed him, and placed him right next to the original... Didn't work. I think it's a little bit more complicated than was hoped. :(
David Brasher
@ RbtRvltin You are making progress. Now that you have your NPC, you will need to create a new quest for him, or else edit the old one. You could go change the conditions on all the companion dialog of the original NPC so that it is said by either of the two characters, the original, plus your new one. You will probably need to pay attention to something like a quest variable for wait and follow. If you are not careful, you could end up with both NPCs following you around. Noobo
@David Brasher Is there any way to extend the time which the dialogue text is shown? It just scrolls by in a second. I've tried recording a temp WAV file - with limited effect, sometimes it plays the recording, sometimes it doesnt.
David Brasher
You can use the "Generate Lip File" box in the recording window to automatically generate the lip movement and time delay.
